It is a lot to lug around. I'm getting a better head and am unsure which one to get - I will be lugging it around for 3-6 months and I'm rather freaked about having a huge amount of weight on my shoulders. A fluid head? Hmmm... I"m going to google that right now. ;)
I'm using a full sensor. ;)

Shamus: I have this head which works nicely for moderate weights, Acratech GV2. Not a lot of weight.
Yes, I'm shopping right now for a head. ;) My battery grip will be purchased tomorrow and I may or may not pick one up.
It's heavy as hell this thing. :O I'm probably looking at 300 for a good head that can support all this weight. I also want one that will hold a large macro lens for my 2014 trip.

I don't know what your gear is but just to give an example for the Acratech ($350 B&H Photo)above.
I have loaded on this head my Canon 7D with battery grip, 100-400MM lens, 560 Flash with better beamer.
I have heard some great things about the really right stuff line but can't speak from experience. I also have the head below a Flashpoint gimbal head, not as good as the Wimberley but a good substitute on a budget ($239 Adorama) I think I like it better than the Acratech.
Look at the size of that thing! :O
I may be forced to purchase two heads at this rate - the chances of me packing that thing around for six months is pretty remote, lol. ;)
I need enough to hang onto about 3kgs or so.

I picked up my battery pack and man is my camera heavy now. D: I'm not going to place it on my current head. Many thousands of dollars worth of equipment falling on the ground does not sound too appealing right now, LOL.
Off to buy a head tomorrow. Looking to spend about $400 on one (or so) and going lightweight and getting a heavyweight macro in another year for my macro lens.

Isn't it amazing how much all this stuff costs? Always in search of the next best shot.

SadElder: I haven't tried the 600mm f4 IS, I have the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L, and I like it. The IS version would add some versatility - but at nearly double the price, and the fact that I prefer using a tripod at high magnification anyway, I saved a bit of cash and went without the IS. I haven't tried anything above the 400 yet - and the 400 is heavy enough in my opinion. I do hear comments from some of my photography friends that while they have a 400mm+ lens, they usually end up choosing something lighter after the first few outings with it.
My friend swears by his Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS II - the apature combined with a full-frame sensor do result in some really nice shots.

Well I just finished two days of shopping and extreme spending. The equipment I bought is gorgeous and high quality but oh man, did I pay... :O I'm not proud of it either, but rather, sick about it...
Anyhoo... Here is my head.
Kirk BH-1 Ball head. It's really gorgeous. Now the reason why I bought it was because of my battery mount - the second I put it on my camera I looked at my previous ball-head and told myself there was NO WAY that heavy camera was going on that. If all that money went crashing down it would have been awful.
I also bought another batter for the battery mount and a $200.00 mounting bracket. :O
I'm going to vomit now but my equipment is all set up and WOW! Is this ball-head awesome. It was expensive as hell but seems well worth it.
