The Jehovah’s Witnesses have gained planning to build a vast UK headquarters complex in Chelmsford.
The International Bible Students Association, which manages the Christian group’s literature, gained planning to redevelop a derelict farm near Galleywood with a 1.2m sq ft scheme.
The £150m complex will provide homes for 1,200 people spread across 16 five-storey blocks, a large printing plant, offices, auditorium, health and fitness centre, water treatment plant and on-site parking for 1,040 vehicles.

The IBSA is now set to begin groundwork at the 82-acre Temple Farm site and start construction by 2016.

That seems a phenomenal number of people just to serve UK JW's. Maybe it's intended to be a bethel for the whole of Europe? I know the UK is one of the most indulgent of the European countries when it comes to personal and religious freedoms. That being said, if the UK does opt out of Europe in the 2017 referendum, it could just return to bite the JW's in their didactic backsides..

£150m?????????? Whose valuation is this, the IBSA's?

Have they factored in the going rates which would be charged by tradesmen and everyone else involved in a major construction, but which of course the IBSA is receiving for free?

This looks like smoke & mirrors to bewilder the sheep into thinking that the Org isn't going to cream off the sales of their London properties!

Anyone got a good idea how much the materials for such a project should cost?

The UK can't opt out of Europe, it is in Europe. You mean the EU? If so, what difference would that make?

    And it won't happen.

Presumably the current Bethel sites on North London prime real estate at Mill Hill will come onto the market soon. They will be worth a lot more than £150m for sure!

It could be that they will be using commercial construction companies to build portions or all of this. For instance, I believe all the steel construction going on in Warwick is being done by outside contractors, and I saw on this month's JW broadcast that the new facility in South Africa is being built by outside contractors rather than volunteers "to save time".
