I was thinking tonight about all the wierd stuff that I viewed as totally normal being brought up as a JW...

    Here's my list...

    - eating BROKEN easter eggs AFTER Easter was not a sin

    - your car always had to be clean in time for the CO visit

    - being assigned to the car park at a convention, with a walkie talkie, meant you had powerful connections.

    - the amount of lines and hand writing on your Sunday Watchtower, spoke volumes of your spirituality

    - as a kid, sneaking a bite of the dry crappy tasting bread before the Memorial was cool - and only ok if you privately begged Jehovah for forgiveness

    What's yours?

    - eating birthday cake brought in by someone in the office is OK if no one sees you. And you are hungry.

    - using highlighter pen to mark your WT and waving it around in a Mr. Bean style makes you more of a spiritual person

    - answering up more than once makes you more of a spiritual person

    - having your kids answer up makes you more of a spiritual parent

    - coming up with a point in the bible highlights makes you more of a spiritual person. Even if anyone could have got the point in 2 mins off the CD ROM

    - recounting an experience/illustration used by the CO/DO at a convention or previous visit makes you a more spiritual person

    - laughing at all the child abuse cases in the Catholic church makes you feel warm and cosy inside about being in the right religion

    - walking through a city wearing a suit, carrying a briefcase and monster cool bag is normal if you are attending an assembly

    - as is wearing a name badge in the evening to go out for a meal

    ....ad infinitum....

Eating lunch sat on the pavement at the side of a busy road in 55 degree heat in your best clothes because the assembley hall has a no food or drink policy.

Having a "Thanksgiving" dinner on the Friday after the holiday was ok because you were just eating and not celebrating a "worldly" holiday.

We had a Presiding Overseer who would walk around during the Watchtower Study to see how we had underlined our magazine. More guilt tripping.

Throwing away the magazines that you could not sell at the doors was wrong - but it was OK to dump them in laundramats where the laundramat attendant would throw them away.

If you buy things at a garage sale, they could be demonized and you will then have to burn them.

Smufs toys are demonized and will get up and walk out of the kingdom hall.

If you attend meetings in a differant congregation to visit friends, then you are spiritually weak because you are "missing meetings".

    - frantically underlining today's WT in a random way just so the microphone handlers and any "roving" elders won't think you're not spiritual.

    - doing things to please/appease others and desperately trying to convince yourself (albeit unsuccessfully) that you're doing it to serve Jehovah

    - pretending to believe stuff you don't

    - saying a talk/meeting part/CO/DO/GB visit was WONDERFUL when if fact you thought it was incredibily lame and questioned the mental condition and/or IQ of this so-called representative of God

    - Agreeing when an older Br/Sis condescendingly commented about whatever offended them about some "spiritually weak" one when if fact you thought it was pretty awesome and wished you had the courage to say so

    - dreading going out in "Field Service" but pretending it was the best thing you could possibly be doing once you got there. Secretly hating yourself for it and wondering how many others there felt the same way
