What if we could bring down the WBTS?

The ONLY possible thing that I can think of is if the Hedge Fund debacle causes governments to reclassify the Watchtower as a profit making organization (Based upon their usage of donor funds to invest the overwhelming bulk of their liquid assets in investment funds). If they are then fined for back taxes it could cause the organization to falter as a formal religion. Imagine the Watchtower filing for chapter 11. LOL.

However informally Jehovah's Witnesses and the doctrine would still continue for many many decades.

i dont think it can continue in its present form or strength. us older generation are fast dying off--and the young ones are far too internet savvy so to swallow much cult crap as they grow up.

Be careful what you wish for.
Millions of loyal adherents would be devastated. There would be thousands of suicides, and the survivors would almost certainly glom onto other, possibly far more damaging, cults.

This. JW's have been trained to follow. If the WTBS comes down in a crash they'll find somebody else to follow. If it dies a natural death they may wake up and find better things to do, but they will have to find it on their own.

That's a nice sentiment but third world countries will continue to show strong growth in the foreseeable future. Then there's the fact that the org is seemingly planning for a decline anyway by funneling contributions into investments. That would offset any long term decline in numbers and therefore by extension income.
As an example also think about the Russell Bible students. 99 years after Russell's death and its still going (Although very small and informal). I'm afraid we'll all be long dead and buried when the time comes for the Borg to finally evaporate with one last whimper.

I am not particularly interested in bringing them down. What I'd like to see is changes made so they are no longer hurting people.

I think my ultimate fantasy is to have everyone, some day, realize that God is just a figment of the human imagination.

Like Reza Aslan said: "If Aliens landed here today, religion would not disappear. It would just morph and keep on ticking". Same with the Org; just study all the times if has changed its policies, beliefs, etc., and it continues to grow in numbers and furthermore wealth.

Just like their fantasy of paradise earth, or the 'anointed' thinking that they are going to heaven with Jesus, or the nutty Muslims and their 72 virgins, just like none of this craziness won't happen, so the demise of the Watchtower won't happen.

I don't know if what I have could be called a "plan" or and "ideal reason"... more like a scenario.

In it, the WTS and GB are all successfully charged with a combination of things (criminal conspiracy and/or negligence, hate speech, tax evasion, undue influence, etc...), and the WT's assets and properties are confiscated by the government and used for soup kitchens, homeless shelters and relief, community centers, etc...

...and in addition, the courts offer deals; immunity or lighter sentences for whistleblowers, and (more importantly) the same for higher-ups, specifically if they publicly renounce WT ideology, admit they were wrong, and apologize.

I suspect the Watchtower is experiencing the same growth pains and problems as the early Catholic church.

'Would Jesus not have returned within our lifetime and brought about his kingdom?'. The Catholic answer to this dilemma was to put the kingdom within the human heart. So there, no more worrying about dates and such. This is the same way that the JW dogma has slowly moved away from date setting.

Now if the tower can survive for long enough (1700 years) they might even start a JW bank. (Just like the Catholics)

If Jesus Christ were to return tomorrow and expose the WTBTS as not spirit directed and as a dangerous cult, most JWs would behave like the Jews did in the Bible.

IMHO the best way to help JWs (and members of other dangerous organizations) in the USA is to revise the Tax Code for tax-exempt organizations to protect children from sexual abuse, prohibit using and promoting undue influence, and increase transparency and accountability. If you would like to help, read the threads

Revise Tax Code to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and How to Complain to the IRS about Non-Profits .

Lawsuits will not significantly impact the WTBTS. The WTBTS will just squeeze JWs for more donations. On April 13, 2015, the California 1st District Appellate Court established a policy that religious organizations do not have a duty to warn members about pedophiles, even though an organization's practices protect and enable predators, short-circuits the prosecution of predators, and prevents reporting the location of convicted predators.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,
