Higher Education: JW's view just one more reason to alienate others

My JW son just turned 18 and is about to graduate high school. His grandfather (my dad), who has never been a JW, wants to encourage him to go to college and doesn't understand why his grandson isn't interested.

BTW, my father graduated from Harvard with a BS in Physics, has a Master's Degree and is also a successful businessman. I have a B.A. in education and am a High School teacher. So obviously education is important in our family.

I tried explaining to my dad:

Realistically, the odds of [your grandson] going to college as long as he remains one of Jehovah's Witnesses are between slim and none as they are indoctrinated to believe that pursing higher education is wrong and evil (I'm not making this up!)

Here is a quote from a 3/6/2012 letter from the leadership of the organization to the local congregations:

"However, Satan, the master of deception, has made the pursuit of higher education dangerous for a Christian. (2 Cor. 11:14)"

What do you think my father thinks of JWs now?

Thats why these idiots will never be more than bit players in the grand scheme of things (not that they were anything to begin with, they just have affected us in a dramatic way). All you have to do is explain something like this, or their "shunning" doctrine to someone who isn't a JW and their face immediately drops to the ground. They just can't believe what you are saying.

What about community college or even trade school? Something he can go to while still at home, maybe he gets in there and really takes to it? You never know...

He probably thinks they're crazy, and he'd be pretty spot on. I discouraged my kids from Uni education, although I did encourage their High school exam completions so that they could always return to education. So wish I'd done it differently, my bad. Can't you convince your son to rethink?

That's what I was going to say......live at home, get a two year AA degree from the community college so he can work full or part time. It's a reasonable compromise. That or a trade school.

Not a bad idea. Maybe he will get the education bug and get serious

Posting Guideline #3 requires that I sanitize my comment. Your father thinks they're all poopy-heads.

hey I remember when I first met my ex wife. Her counsler was trying to get her into a college. After a few meetings, my ex's Dad, (Who was the PO at the time), wrote a letter explaining their beliefs. Well this guy likes to listen to himself and use grandiose terms. I saw the letter and laughed. He was saying things like "not touching the unclean thing" and other terms that would lead someone to conclude that he was some religious loon.

Its true, crazy but true. Many witnesses are stuck in occupations like window and carpet cleaning. Not that there is anythig wrong with those occupations, but your options are limited when all you know is window cleaning.

In my congregation there are 7 people that have businesses doing carpets and or windows. Of these 7 - 5 are on the servant body in some form.

How open minded can someone be to higher education when they are stuck cleaning windows with no prospect of other employment? To validate their situation/choice they will oftentimes villify other peoples choice to pursue education. It's sad.

The funny thing is to watch all of these 7 businesses try to hustle for the same accounts. Looks like 7 ducks fighting each other for 5 pieces of stale bread at the park.

It just gets dumber and dumber.
