There is nothing wrong with their way of life. They're actually quite well off. But even if they were not, we each have the choice of how to live, regardless of how we might have been raised.
That being said, I am still left feeling sad by the story. Simply because of the reason behind their choice. Had they not been waiting for Armageddon, would they have made different choices? It is sad to think that they would have, but that time is passed for them. Perhaps their children though.
