Are you a Christian, if I may ask?
Yes, but a very liberal one. I go to an Episcopal church with a woman Priest and gays in the pews..... How sick is that? (being sarcastic here)

One person had this to say on her comment to that video.
Don't just comment on this video. Send a letter to Governor Perry expressing your outrage that a judge beat his child like this. I don't' care if she grown up now or not. He has another child that is ten years old.

Do it for his other child.
cofty: I cannot begin to describe how much I want to punch is fucking face - the sadistic bastard.
Offhand, that would seem to be appropriate, IMO, too. Thanks for your ever passionate response, Cofty. BTW, I hope your treatment is going well.
Yes the bible is absolutely responsible for this abuse
For the record, I'm not saying I agree or disagree - I am, though, hoping to take this topic in a different direction. Please bear with me.
GaryNeal: Hell is a place that people like him deserve to go to.
I appreciate your reply Gary. Just to clarify, do you mean a literal, eternal hellfire? Also, can you imagine any act this child might commit that would warrant such a beating from her father?
Still taking opinions if there are any takers in the Christian community. The overwhelming consensus thus far - unsurprisingly - is that this father's actions against his daughter are undeniably wrong. At least one poster wishes to punch the girl's father in the face and another suggested hell.
What say you? (And I assure you there is a point... I will get there eventually but I hoped to get a broad range of perspectives among Christians.)

A couple things, if I may, dear SBC (again, peace to you!):
If you're planning to reference directives/actions taken by the "OT God" and falsely attributed to the Most Holy One of Israel, you're going to have to count me out of the discussion for two (2) reasons:
1. I don't believe in God as set forth in much of the OT, which "god" was created by the false pen of the scribes; and
2. You asked "my" opinion/position/perspective, which I learned from the Holy One of Israel, Christ, the Son... and not the Bible (although some of it is written there). In that light, I would have to refrain from continuing if your "direction" is to reference events recorded in the OT... rather than those recorded as to and/or taught/done by that One because, for me, the matter would be moot: all of what's recorded in the OT about JAH is held out/accepted by many as truth... and I just don't agree with that.
Second (and this is sort of in jest, but a valid point, IMHO), my understanding is that the position of many non-christians is that starting out with one agenda while having another as one's goal is "intellectually dishonest" and so taboo on this forum. Unlike non-believers, however, many "christians" probably haven't/won't respond because of the appearance of deception (although I know that's not what you intend... I think.) I'm sure you've already considered that, though... but just thought it worthy of mention.
Anyway, I'll reserve further comment for now. Let's see where you're headed.
Peace!
YOUR servant and a slave of Christ,
SA
Easy there, Shelby. The "directives given by the "OT God" is not where I'm headed and, to be frank, I wasn't planning on probing your opinion anymore. But I do appreciate your contribution.

Wow, where to start? First item on my "agenda" was to collect information, views, perspectives. I didn't realize I needed to submit an outline. I feel like I'm on the Theocratic Ministry School again.
Regardless, if you'd like collect your intellectual virtues and bow out of this thread with dignity (so as not to risk getting them dirty), I completely understand. Peace to you!

I agree, and I love your English accent!! I think of you almost every day.

I think it works perfectly on the politics threads, and it's called giving them enough rope.
Okay, sorry for my slow response. The wife came home with the kids after hanging out with a friend on Chick-Fil-A kids night. I had to put the oldest one to sleep. I will respond and let you take this thread whereever you want.
I appreciate your reply Gary. Just to clarify, do you mean a literal, eternal hellfire?
I've had time to calm down and think on it. I will not pretend to answer for God as I do not have His perspective on matters, and even if I did, I am not Him, so. In a sense of eternal hellfire, frankly, just giving the judge punishment that fits his crime would satisfy justice for my sake. Sometimes, death is too good a punishment for people and given the response to this video by the news media and the world, I think the good judge is getting a good dose of karma biting him in the behind.
But to answer your question, at the time I made the response (while still in an emotional state), I meant the eternal seperation from God and all. Whether it is asleep in death forever or just completely annihilated. I won't say eternal torment because I (speaking for myself and not for God) would be merciful enough to just let the poor soul eventually be extinguished.
Also, can you imagine any act this child might commit that would warrant such a beating from her father?
Any? I honestly cannot say. My first instinct would be to say no, but none of us would know how we would respond to a child that say, severly beat and harmed his or her younger sibling, for example. When I say severe, I mean VERY SEVERE and life threatening. But, for what most kids do, never.
Would you consider her father's actions immoral?
I guess, yes. Sometimes I think that would depend very much on what morals are acceptable or not. I know you're asking christians, but I don't know if that is because this judge is supposed to be a christian or not? Because I know more about this than just that video, then I'd say his actions probably were immoral... as in it seemed that he was more concerned with how her actions reflected on him, than he was with her welfare, and keeping her from turning down a dark path.
I do think his actions were wrong though, in either case.
If not immoral, would you say his actions were unjust?
Yes, definitely. If she was pirating things off the internet, then take away her internet privilages and make her pay for the things she pirated. Even if that money just goes to a cause against whatever it is she did. Punishment fit the crime kind of thing.
If not unjust or immoral, how about unloving?
Well, the act itself looks unloving. But parents can lose their tempers and do things that they regret, and that doesn't mean that they don't love their kids. I got the belt when I was a kid, and I know my mother loves me more than anything, including herself. She just didn't know any better.
Bonus: From your perspective, how should god should deal with a parent who is physically abusive to a child?
I don't know how to answer that.
I hope that God has mercy on us all, and we all sure need it. Or at least I know that I do. Mercy and love can turn people around, make them see a better way and by showing them that, show them how wrong or dark their way is - hate, anger, punishment tend to make things worse.
If someone can't or refuses to be turned around, then what can be done other than to prevent them from hurting others, by keeping them 'out' of say, the kingdom?
Peace,
Tammy
Easy there, Shelby. The "directives given by the "OT God" is not where I'm headed and, to be frank, I wasn't planning on probing your opinion anymore. But I do appreciate your contribution.
LOLOLOLOL! Touché, dear SBC (peace to you!). I wasn't really trying to cause a "problem" or insinuate that MY opinion is what you were after - LOLOLOL! Just a little "gun-shy" of setups, is all... and your comments as to a different direction made me go "Uh-oh, now what's THIS all about." I could (should) have just kept my thoughts to myself. My bad. LOLOLOL!
Wow, where to start? First item on my "agenda" was to collect information, views, perspectives. I didn't realize I needed to submit an outline. I feel like I'm on the Theocratic Ministry School again.
You didn't need to and you shouldn't feel that way (but I know exactly how you feel ; I'm often expected to adhere to some unknown "standard", as well, so...). That's why I stated it was in jest. It was valid, IMHO, because that's exactly how I feel when the same is "required" of me. Since I know many review your posts, I took advantage, is all. Sorry 'bout that.
Regardless, if you'd like collect your intellectual virtues and bow out of this thread with dignity (so as not to risk getting them dirty), I completely understand.
I don't mind a little dirt, dear one; heck, I don't mind a lot of dirt. Again, just "perceived" a setup, albeit perhaps wrongly... and reacted. Perhaps wrongly there, too. Happens from time to time (well, at least with me).
Peace to you!
And you, as well!
