I think dresses reveal much more than fitted or loose trousers. Why don't JW men have to wear robes and prayer shawls as Jesus, Peter, Paul, and others did? I can't imagine Jesus is a tacky business suit with tie.

I was very active in women's groups. My goal was to write about emerging feminist issues so I read many recent cases of sexual discrimination. The airlines had very strict, silly rules for stewardesses. Pink suitcases were forbidden. There was a weight rule and contact lens rule. No rules existed for men. My roommate interned for a conservative Congressman from Ohio. They were ordered to wear heavy makeup. One of his highest female assistants actually took a ruler and measured skirts to make certain they were short enough.

Again, the WT presents us as silly creatures with no business decorum. Also, our sexuality must be smashed while their sexualty is holy. The whole male/penis worship was too much for me. It was funny b/c it was one the one subject I could mention to my JW grandmother. She agreed with me. If there were ever a born feminist spirit, it was my gm. It ended with an audible sigh, and that is the rule for now, until Armageddon. The women in my family were womanly and strong. Men pulled down the gene pool.

I had another roommate whose mother lovingly gave her an entire set of fuschia luggage.

For every frigid winter day JW women are freezing, there is a summer day the men are hating their jackets.

Personally, I love the skirt culture, as it makes discrete flashes and diddling in the back seat of a pioneer's minivan possible and quickies easier in the bathroom, during the service meeting. Unfortunately, I doubt many JWs are taking advantage of this aspect.

I have to wonder if the thought of turning a young "sister" over one's knee, hiking her skirt up, and giving her a sound paddling for having low hours or sporadic meeting attendance are dancing in the doddering old GB's minds when they make up rules like this. It's like "theocratic Viagra".

ANYTHING can be a disfellowshipping offense if when counseled on it by the elders you respond with a "brazen" attitude.

If a woman insists on wearing pants to meetings she will lose her privileges (as meager as those are). Then, if she tries to spread the pants-wearing or is counseled on pants-wearing and is intransigent, the elders can DF her.

A great example of insanity in action.

If you are a JW woman reading these posts,

    Have you ever wondered? -

"Am I trapped in a mind control cult?"

This is yet one more example of WTS hypocrisy.

They are always very quick to condemn "Christendom" for imposing man-made rules and regulations, yet seem oblivious to the fact that they are doing exactly the same:

    - and no more so than over this matter of dress and grooming.

Nowhere in the Bible does it prohibit women from wearing trousers (no translation that I have ever read, anyway!), likewise no scripture condemns men for wearing beards. This very fact was raised during the mid-1970s, when the emphasis was suddenly placed on the role of ones conscience should play in deciding such matters. At least one Australian congregation (Newmarket, in Brisbane) acknowledged that dress and grooming were quite correctly matters to be decided by an individual's conscience. To that end, brothers were not hasselled for wearing beards, and sisters were permitted to wear trouser suits in field service, at the meetings and even on the platform. At one point, nearly all the congregation's ministerial wore beards.

However, it was as if the WTS then feared it was loosing control of matters, and after a few years they re-imposed the WTS Talmud. In effect, each individual was notified "We will tell you what your conscience is telling you. You, yourself are incapable of knowing."

    Bill.

Do you speak purely from personal knowledge or can you cite a source for this? I find congregational freedom being seized by "Mother" very interesting. I enjoy reading about things like the Menlo Park situation.

Because my sister is already very attractive, anything she wears that is in anyway stylish makes her stand out and a target for criticism. When she was about 19 or 20 the Circuit Overseer talked to her and my Mom after the meeting about the knee length suede boots she was wearing with a below the knee wool skirt. They had a slight platform and a narrow heel but otherwise they were really pretty simple but they did look quite elegant . He said that back in New York, only prostitutes wear boots like that. We don't want to give the wrong impression or cause anyone to stumble anyone in our Ministry.

My Mother was incensed and quipped. "In the Societies own literature, only Harlots are shown with extremely long blood red finger nails like the ones your wife wears. I wonder how much of a distraction they are to the householders out in the ministry as she presents the magazines or turns the pages of the Bible" Then turned on her heel and walked off, pulling my stunned sister along with her.

    My Mom was awesome !

    Great mom! She had spunk.

I hate Hillary's pants suits. Of course, in her defense, she is no slave to corporate fashion dictates. I wonder how Angela Merkel dresses.
