The two witness rule on child abuse still makes my blood boil

Today while I was working I remembered a WT on there having to be two witness to a person who comes forward later in life saying he had been molested as a chld and I was thinking no it really could not have been to blatant like I remembered it. Sadly I did find it and no I remembered it right. It to me is SICK! Thought some newbies might like to see it.

It is from the November 1st WT 1995 pages 25-29

    "What Can Elders Do?

If the elders are approached by a member of the congregation who is experiencing flashbacks or "repressed memories" of child abuse, two of them are usually assigned to help. These elders should kindly encourage the afflicted one to focus for the time being on coping with the emotional distress. The names of any "remembered" abusers should be kept in strict confidence.

The elders' primary task is to act as shepherds. (Isaiah 32:1, 2; 1 Peter 5:2, 3) They should be especially careful to "clothe [themselves] with the tender affections of compassion, kindness, lowliness of mind, mildness, and long-suffering." (Colossians 3:12) Let them listen in a kindly way and then apply healing words from the Scriptures. (Proverbs 12:18) Some who are afflicted with painful "memories" have expressed appreciation for elders who make regular visits or even telephone calls to check to see how they are doing. Such contacts need not take a lot of time, but they show that Jehovah's organization cares. When the afflicted one realizes that his Christian brothers truly love him, he may be helped to recover a considerable degree of emotional balance.

What if the sufferer decides that he wants to make an accusation? Then the two elders can advise him that, in line with the principle at Matthew 18:15, he should personally approach the accused about the matter. If the accuser is not emotionally able to do this face-to-face, it can be done by telephone or perhaps by writing a letter. In this way the one accused is given the opportunity to go on record before Jehovah with his answer to the accusation. He may even be able to present evidence that he could not have committed the abuse. Or perhaps the one accused will confess, and a reconciliation may be achieved. What a blessing that would be! If there is a confession, the two elders can handle matters further in accordance with Scriptural principles.

If the accusation is denied, the elders should explain to the accuser that nothing more can be done in a judicial way. And the congregation will continue to view the one accused as an innocent person. The Bible says that there must be two or three witnesses before judicial action can be taken. (2 Corinthians 13:1; 1 Timothy 5:19) Even if more than one person "remembers" abuse by the same individual, the nature of these recalls is just too uncertain to base judicial decisions on them without other supporting evidence. This does not mean that such "memories" are viewed as false (or that they are viewed as true). But Bible principles must be followed in establishing a matter judicially.

What if the one accused-though denying the wrongdoing-is really guilty? Does he "get away with it," as it were? Certainly not! The question of his guilt or innocence can be safely left in Jehovah's hands. "The sins of some men are publicly manifest, leading directly to judgment, but as for other men their sins also become manifest later." (1 Timothy 5:24; Romans 12:19; 14:12) The book of Proverbs says: "The expectation of the righteous ones is a rejoicing, but the very hope of the wicked ones will perish." "When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes." (Proverbs 10:28; 11:7) Ultimately, Jehovah God and Christ Jesus render everlasting judgment in justice.-1 Corinthians 4:5.

    Resisting the Devil

When dedicated souls endure in the face of great physical or emotional pain, what an evidence it is of their inner strength and love for God! And what a testimony to the power of Jehovah's spirit to sustain them!-Compare 2 Corinthians 4:7.

Peter's words apply to such ones: "Take your stand against [Satan] solid in the faith." (1 Peter 5:9) Doing so may not be easy. Sometimes, it may even be difficult to think clearly and logically. But take heart! Soon, the Devil and his crafty acts will no longer exist. Truly, we long for that time when "God himself . . . will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."-Revelation 21:3, 4."

Most victioms do no not come forward until they are in their late 30's or early 40's like with the Catholic church where I live most of those suing the church are in their 40's. So according to this WT it would be a repressed memory. And if the pedophile denies it 'even if more then one victim comes forward the nature of these recalls is just to uncertain. And so the pedophile will continue to be viewed as a innocent person.'

And they have the gull to slam the Catholic's

What are Examples of Child Endangerment?

The states differ as to what constitutes child endangerment, but some common examples include:

    • Leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle
    • Driving while intoxicated with a child in the motor vehicle
    • Hiring a person with a known history of sexual offenses as a childcare provider
    • Serving alcohol to an underage driver
    • Leaving a young child unsupervised or in the care of another young child
    • Unreasonable corporal punishment resulting in bodily injury
    • Drug manufacturing in the presence of a child
    • Leaving a young child unsupervised in an unsafe area
    • Failure to report suspected child abuse
What are the Penalties for Endangering a Child?

The penalties for endangering a child vary from state to state but can be very severe:

    • California: Imprisonment for up to 6 years
    • Illinois: Imprisonment for up to 10 years
    • New York: Imprisonment for up to 1 year
    • Texas: Imprisonment for up to 20 years

Hi life is to short. JWs and exJWs should also be aware of child endangerment laws in some states of the USA (or protection laws in other countries). An abused person should consult a lawyer in states like California, Illinois, New York, and Texas when sexually abused and also unreasonable corporal punishment resulting in bodily injury. I wonder if the WTBTS will be writing a new article about advise for elders considering that laws have changed since 1995 in some places.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

The JW's/WT should be ashamed of their lack of love and concern for the vulnerable, they still, in 2011, do not have an active proramme to protect the vulnerable, oh yes, on paper they have a"policy", but they do not implement the measures that respectable organizations and churches do to protect those at risk.

They should have an appointed person who is responsible for protection on every occasion they meet, even in private homes for F.S.

No adult not vetted and approved should be alone with a vulnerable person ever. Etc Etc Not even in the toilet facilities at the K.H

The WT has no concern for the victims, past ,present or future, they only care about covering up the abuse that goes on, and will continue to go on, and protecting their sorry ass from law suits.

I hope this lack of care comes back to bite them in the bum.

    Thank you ABible Student

In my state of Wasthington they also have a law on the books like this

"Hiring a person with a known history of sexual offenses as a childcare provider"

I had contacted the police about the elders letting a level 2 sex offender hold and talk care of amentally handicapped little girl who was three years old at the time. The police officer who I spoke to told me of this law. The most that would have happened to the elders if I had known of this law was that they might have gotten a $1000 dollar fine but still that was something.

Instead I blew up and my husband was an elder at the time also so they finally stopped the pedophile from taking care of the child. Then it was too late to get the police involved, and now all the elders say it never happened that I just have made it all up because I am crazy.

Wobble you are so right the current elders book it beyond sick in how they cover their butts and do not care a bit about children. After all the elders are independent agents who have been given clear direction on how to handle child abuse so if something happens to a child the headquarters will let them fry if the can. I was told this myself when I called Bethel legal.

I just know for myself, even though I have always known I was abused I had no voice to speak out until I was in my late 30's. I was so afraid of not being believed and that it was my fault somehow and being told that I was crazy. Which by they way did happen the elder have told me that, that I am mentally ill, lovely is't that and so convent.

Reading the 95 WT is so upsetting and nothing has changed since then.

We were taught all our lives to go to the elders and only the elders when we needed help.

We were also taught that remaining morally clean was of utmost importance.

Its quite a shock to go to the elders because a family member is assaulting you, only to be told "its his word against yours. theres nothing we can do about it" and "do not talk about this to anyone else, as that would bring shame on jahs name"

One of the worst times of my life was after the elders told me this, I had to get in the car with the man that assaulted me, and ride back home with him.

The three elders did not give a shit, not one of them ever checked up on me or inquired if i was OK. The JC was over and there was nothing they could do so case closed, nothing more to be done. All three of them were fathers, two of them were grandfathers.

How how how does an adult human, shepard of the flock, behave that way? To this day it boggles my mind.

  • looloo

this makes me so angry ! my daughter was raped and abused mentaly physically and sexually because the stupid religion being more bothered about their reputation and not reporting a child abuser years earlier to the police when they knewhe had abused a girl in the congregation ! my daughter could have been spared her life sentence had they not reprooved him ! but reported him to the police !

    life is to short,

The JW organization says that two witnesses to SEPARATE acts of wrongdoing are acceptable for someone to be DF'ed.

"If there is another witness to the same type of sin on the part of the accused, this would be basis for forming a judicial committee."-Flock book, elders' manual, published in 1991.

    Band on the Run

MY father was extremely abusive. The Witnesses were the very last place anyone of us would turn. He gained justification from WT lit and culture. I was dragged against my will to KH, publicly pinched and kicked in full view of everyone. Not a single boo.

He would scream "Spoil the child..." and "Honor thy father (the mother part was lost on him)." We were extraordinarily good kids. My mom would screech back from Paul, "Parents, provoke not your children." The neighbors had to hear. People bouncing off walls, children with visible brusies, And he had the gall to go door to door proclaiming God's kingdom. What a Witness/witness!

The WT lawyers are cronies. Some states require reporting to authorities. They say to pay caesar's things to caesar. Caesar should be called. 911. No judicial proving anything. This is very criminal behavior alleged. An elder picking up the phone is not convicting anyone without two witnesses. Note that Caesar no longers requires two witnesses when circumstances, DNA provide probitive evidence. The focus should not be a silly number for a crime committed in private but the quality of the evidence. There is no harm in stating allegations have been made but we can not investigate for many reasons to put families on notice.

Notice that as with the Catholic Church, most people realize that every religion must have bad actors. The pain is in the very people most committed to children to betray them. There are no issues of false accusation b/c there is no criminal process with the Witnesses. Liability insurance should encourage reporting, not hiding.

    Stand Firm..

Your back to defend WBT$ BS..LOL!!..

How many pedophiles bring an audience with them?..

How many JW`s have the expert training to deal with Pedophiles?..

    The WBT$ Protects JW Pedophiles..

    .................. ...OUTLAW

  • StandFirm

Hey OUTLAW. I came back for research purposes and thought I'd mix it up a little while I'm here. Anyway, what is this about with pedophiles not bringing an audience?

The victim is a witness to their own molestation. Can you imagine any organization that would take action against someone on the word of one person alone with no corroborating evidence?
