Is immorality escalating?

Quite the opposite, compared to the world before the "last days".

Immoral lynchings of blacks in the US have virtually stopped.

Immoral discrimination against women, even denying them the right to vote, has ceased.

Immoral child labor practices have been ended, at least in the western world.

Immoral pillaging of natural resources is restricted, and endangered species are protected.

Immorally corrupt business practices are regulated by various government agencies. And so on.

Or are you uber-narrowly restricting the term "immorality" to refer to horny young adults shtupping each other without the benefit of marriage?

If you define "immorality" as "sex outside of marriage", like the WTS, and ignore the dozens of other forms of ethical and moral violations that used to occur, well, yeah. Kids are as horny as ever, but now they don't hide it so much.

According to Hugh Hefner, everything is getting better everyday. Finally, it appears that modern society is starting to come around to accepting pornography, abortion and gay marriage for the good things they are for mankind.

Good post, Sir82, and really everybody else too. I guess there's a flipside to every coin. Does that mean morals are largely subjective then? I'll never forget the interview with the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang member who said, "I've got morals, just not yours." Where's the line drawn?

Go only few generations (ahem, real generations, not as per latest WT definition) back and see when did your grandparents have their first child?

Betchya in their mid to late teens...and that was NOT due to an immaculate conception.

Draw your own conclusions, even by WT standards.

    For starters:

    * 50 million abortions since Roe vs. Wade in 1973

    * Infanticide in countries that limit the amount children a married couple can have (read: males only)

    * Marriage being redefined

    * Organ harvesting happening in countries such as China and Belgium

    * Euthanasia being sold to the public as "mercy killing"

Not to mention what already been brought by previous posters. But hey, we're progressing as a society....

Someone recently posted a comment with a link to the Skeptic's Annotated Bible and it was sort of interesting to read the bible without the lense that its just so rosy and perfect.

    Are babies that important?

Doesn't seem so since Jehovah is constantly killing babies in the Old Testament.

What about poor babies that are the result of sexual immorality of a king and his murder of her husband? The punishment...kill the baby! WTF?.

I like the bible but yeah its a hodpodge of conflicting morals that are constanly bent.

Compared to the old testament, we live in an extremely moral world. It does seem like morals are really in the eye of the beholder and what ever perspective you have.

Pretty much subjective, yes. There are plenty of societies that operate on way different moral standards than we do. The philosopher Sam Harris has given what I think is a good rule of thumb: "Imagine a situation worse than the worst hell you can think of. Everything is bad. Now you might be saying that there's a silver lining somewhere, but I wouldn't know what you'd be talking about. This called The Worst Possible Scenario For Everyone. Anything that moves away from that situation can be called 'right' and anything that moves towards that scenarion can be called 'wrong'.

The guy has written a book on this subject. It's called 'The Moral Landscape'. If you enjoy the subject of morality, this is probably a good book to start with.

Hey, let's find a 'Negro' and lynch him! Oh, wait a minute, our society finds that behavior repellent and unthinkable.

I wanna beat my wife! I'll use a stick no thicker than my thumb. Oh, our society rejects that , also.

My damn wife gave birth to a girl instead of the boy I asked for. Can I leave the baby on a local garbage dump, to die? Oh, yeah, I remember! The ancient Romans did that but we can't.

I would like to parade down Main Street while holding detached body parts from 'Injuns'. What? I can't? Why not? Do I have to call them "Native Americans, too?

Would you like more - or is this enough?

    No I don't think so.

As for Outlaw's comment, I agree. For what the Dubs consider immorality, I've seen more immorality while a JW than I have out in the "world". I'd say because its a closed, tight inner-society with restrictive rules of conduct. Being taught "morals" based on fear of punishment and hope for reward are not the building blocks for true morality.
