I had been doing yard work all day and then I went to plant a rose bush for my Dad .....When I stepped down on the shovel my lower back went out ! OMG it hurt ....I couldn't straighten completely up afterwards . So I went to see the Chiro ,he used an activator on my back and now the pain is worse ! I took a muscle relaxer and have been putting ice on the area ,but I just could not sleep . It feels better sitting up .....walking down the stairs from my bedroom brought me to tears ...

So now what should I do ? Wait it out or go see my regular Doctor tommorrow ......I don't think I want to see the Chiro again

Is it normal for it to hurt os much after an adjustment ? I have seen Chiro's in the past and it always has helped ,but this time I 'm not sure it was worth it .....

I've had no experience with Chiropractors (so far) so I don't really have any advice for you, but I just wanted to say you have my sympathies and I hope the pain goes away soon. And I think it was a lovely gesture that you were planting a rose bush for your Dad.

I'd go see your doctor. Have you had bad back pain before? Any serious injuries before? I hope you began to feel better soon.

I have experienced a ruptured disc in the lower back. It taught me that good health is paramount. It also taught me to support myself... Try an osteopath, far less violent in action than a chiro...

Chiropractors are not created equal. I found a good one for my back through good referrals. The first thing he did was make sure it was not something I should be seeing my GP or specialist about. When he had done all he could for me, he also referred me back and my GP sent me to a specialist and that is when they discovered my arthritis.

I would use Google to familiarize yourself with how to spot a good one and what they would say about your condition.

Good idea to check in with your regular doctor - you probably need an anti-inflammatory in addition to the muscle relaxer, and maybe an x-ray to see if there's something else going on. Icing the area is a very good thing to do.

I'd also provide feedback to the chiropractor.

Whenever my SI joint starts acting up, I start taking Aleve (naprosyn) as directed [not advisable if you have allergies to ASA or NSAIDs], applying ice (after 24 hours alternate hot and cold packs), and when I'm in bed, I make a "nest" out of pillows - one between my knees if I'm on my side (or under my knees if I'm on my back), another behind my back to keep it straight, and another in front so I don't twist forward. It sometimes takes a couple of days, but it does seem to make things feel better. I also do an SI stretch exercise that sounds like torture, but I swear by it.

As strange as it sounds, I usually notice back issues flaring up when my walking shoes are approaching the end of their life expectancy. Replacing them on a regular basis seems to help a lot.

My dad is a retired chiro, old school like when they were actually taught to read the body with hands

he has no regard for modern chiropractics and the 'activator'.

his recomendation to me (as i live 800 km away)

is find a manipulative physio because at least they are still trained to read the spine the old way.

hope you get relief soon, been their done that!

I became very tight when I had facial pain. My muscles were boulders so I tried massage and adjustments. I don't think highly of chiropractic training. A doctor should screen out any condition that the adjustment might worsen. I do know several mds who have sought chiropratic and it helped. They don't tell their colleagues. A leading muscular doctor in nY told me that chiropractor works but that its rationale is nonsense.

I was very fortunate to run into an osteoopath who did adjustments. An orthopedic doctor or PT would never have helped. His techniques were amazing. My muscles were more pliable with him than anyone else. One of my close friends is Chinese. When I told her of my adjustments, she told me that adjustments are Chinese follk medicine.

Chiropractors are not respected in the nY area where so many MDs exist. In eastern PA, they are the accepted norm. So maybe this is cultural. Bottom line is I want assurance from an MD or DO who have much more training before I'd take the leap to a chiropractor. It was an MD who first told me to go.

It sounds like you may have a herniated disc...I know it's very painful, because I have four of them. I don't trust chiropractors for my lower back problem. However, I visit one every few years for a neck problem, and my husband goes for lower back and hip ailments. The pain is usually worse after an adjustment. If it doesn't ease up in a few days, go see an MD...an osteopath is probably best. In the meantime, aside from everything else you're doing, try elevating your feet when you're sleeping. It should take the pressure off of your lower back. I've had an adjustable bed for years, and before that, I slept in a recliner. Doctors used to say that sleeping in a recliner was bad for the back, but I've also read the opposite opinion.
