I actually saw a huge billboard about this and because I read about this on JWN I could explain it to my hubbie.

Has he predicted dates before; how does he explain it when the end is late?

It could be that Harold Camping's purpose in life is to be the poster boy for what not to do with your life.

Mistakes

When nothing comes to pass on a predicted date, typically those who make such predictions extend them:

1. Forgot to factor in that there was no Year 0

2. Should have measured from the END of the flood, not the beginning

3. Time gap between the ark coming to rest and Noah exiting the ark

4. Julian v. Gregorian calendar differences

5. Difference between religious and civil (Nisan v. Tishri) reckoning of years

6. Time should have been reckoned from the Exodus, not the flood

7. Time should have been reckoned from entry into the promised land, not the Exodus

8. Time should have been reckoned from conquering of Canaan, not entry into the promised land

Then there are the other stand-bys:

A. Claim that something important did happen -- invisibly -- which only the faithful will understand

B. Add in a 40 year harvest period

C. Let your successor come up with a whole new rationale for another round of date calculations

How about a novel approach?
