The word "El" comes from the root word meaning "might, strength and power". In scripture, the primary meanings of this root are "god" (pagan or false gods), "GOD" (the true God of Isreal), and sometimes "the mighty", (referring to men or angels.

When used of the true God of Isreal, EL is almost always qualified by additional words that define the meaning and distinquish him from false gods. These other names or titles for God are called 'construct forms".

    Some examples are;

    EL (basic form)

El Echad - The One God (Mal. 2:10)

El Emet - The God of Truth (ps. 31:5)

El Tsaddik - The righteous God (Isa. 45:21)

El Yisreal - The God of Isreal (Ps. 68:36)

El Elyon - The most high God (Gen. 14:20, Ps. 9:2)

Archeology shows that the people that came to be called Israel actually migrated from the older established city states that we have come to call Cannaan -West of aincient Israel (in contrast to the bible's claim that the Israelites swept in from the east after wandering the deasert for 40 years with Moses).

The Canaanite religion taught that El was the cheif god of their pantheon, he was married to Asherah and he had many sons that included Baal Hadad (and some recon Yahweh/Jehovha). We know this because clay tablets were found in Ugarit that depict their mythology.

The fact that the bible chooses to condemn Baal, Asherah and other gods, but calls it's god El suggests that they developed the Canaanite belieafs as their society developed. Yahweh/Jehovah is not mentioned in these texts, so it is reconed this name for God came later, however there are hints in some scriptures that Yahweh/Jehovah was considered the son of El. Deuteronomy 32:8-9 for example which says the Most High divided up the nations he gave unto Yahweh/Jehovah the people of Jacob as an inheritence.

    Mat,

The NIV bible translates dueteronomy 32:8-9 this way; When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Isreal".

This verse is the only one in Dueteronomy where the name for God is "Most High", here it emphasizes the Lords Sovereignty over all creation. Thus he can divide the lands the way he sees fit. I do not see where this verse or how this verse hints that God is "the son of El?"

God is called "Most High" the first time in the book of Genesis 14:18 where Abram refers to God by this name.

You are correct that this term as well as "lord of heaven" and "creator of earth" were frequently applied to the chief cannanite deity in ancient times. But Abram, by identifying Melchizedek's "God Most High" with "the LORD" bore testimony to the one true God. (see Genesis 14:22)

The bible does not hide the fact that people worshiped many gods, they are named in the bible. But it was Abram (Abraham), who first made the distinction between the false dieties and the only true God. By applying the titles given to the false gods to the Creator of all things, showing that HE ALONE should be called by these titles. This is no way means we are worshipping a Caananite god. We KNOW who we are worshipping.

El Ron Hubbard - The god of scientology - well that is priceless!

This is a great thread............thanks for posting it. Peace, Lilly

Hi Lovelylil, as it happens this subject and the scripture has been discussed before. Here:

    http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/bible/165791/1/YHWH-a-minor-pagan-god-Ugaritic-Texts-and-the-Sons-of-El

you left out verse 9 in your quote, which is the main point:

When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,
    when he divided all mankind,
he set up boundaries for the peoples
according to the number of the sons of Israel

For the LORD’s portion is his people,
    Jacob his allotted inheritance
    .

Why would Jehovah need to inherit the people of Jacob? Translations try to obscure this. The TEV translates it thus:

8When the Most High (Q) gave to the nations their inheritance,
    when he (R) divided mankind,
he fixed the borders [a] of the peoples
according to the number of the sons of God. [b]
9 But the LORD’s portion is his people,
    Jacob his allotted heritage.

Notice how the sons of Israel in the NIV become the sons of God in the TEV. This is a topic in itself. But suffice to say some scholars belieave that despite the fact that the bible has been edited to fit a monotheistic aganda, some verses managed to escape their censorship, and this is one of them.

Mat, reading that, I see this:

The nations (people) were given land and borders, etc. (When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance)

But God kept the people for himself, and not the land. (But the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage)
