If you told your daughter something similar, then you are wise after all. You shouldn't step aside and let someone claim something that was rightfully earned by you to begin with. That's not charity, that's enabling an asshole. Your daughter might not regret it now, but I can almost guarantee she will in the future.
Second best doesn't mean shit in the real world, nor does some story about "stepping aside" during an interview. It will most likely be seen as either:
1.) a total bullshit lie made up in order to promote themselves to the prospective interviewer OR
2.) seen as weakness on the part of your daughter.

Coming from you, I view that as the highest compliment.
I tried to get her not to drop the course; her teacher tried, but to no avail.
She went over our heads to the principal, and he ordered the teacher to allow her to do it.
My daughter can be a stubborn little heifer when she's of a mind to be one.
