First, it is impossible to judge with righteousness unless the truth is known. As in Israel, serious matters must be ‘searched thoroughly.’ (Deuteronomy 13:14; 17:4) So one aim of a hearing is to find out the facts of the case. But this can and should be done with love. (1 Corinthians 13:4, 6, 7) Once the facts are known, the elders will do whatever is necessary to protect the congregation and maintain within it Jehovah’s high standards and the free flow of his spirit. (1 Corinthians 5:7, 8)

*** w63 7/1 p. 411 What Disfellowshiping Means ***What is the purpose of this cutting off from God’s congregation? The most important purpose is the preservation of Jehovah’s pure worship. No corrupting influence is allowed to remain. The one who practices wrongdoing must be taken out for the protection and purity of the congregation, since “a little leaven ferments the whole lump.” (Gal. 5:9) If not cleared out, this corruption can block the free flow of Jehovah’s spirit to the entire congregation. Jehovah will not bless that which is impure, as was evidenced in the case of Achan. (Josh. 7:1-26) These serious derelictions can be compared to a cancer. If a body member is cancerous, the entire body is in danger. If necessary, the diseased member is amputated in order to save the rest of the body.

This is to make people feel guilty because they have a bad thought or do something horrible like listening to Led Zeppelin. They are made to feel that they are holding Jehovah's spirit back. Also, if they are not doing enough field circus. The other thing it is designed to do is to make people rat each other out. If someone does something horrible like putting up a strand of Christmas lights or smokes one cigarette, that is going to impede the Unholy Spirit unless they are ratted out.

Well, for the record, I hope I am impeding the Unholy Spirit. During the period I was in (and attempting to do a decent job), I saw the congregation level off from rapid growth with meeting attendance averaging around 110 to meeting attendance averaging in the 60s and lower 70s within a few years. Then, the other congregation using the Kingdumb Hell started having the same problem around the time I quit, with their boasting sessions falling from the 100-110 range to the 50s and 60s.

Since then, I went out and bought a Ouija board, I listen to rap and heavy metal music (and Christmas songs), frequent apostate web sites as I see fit, view the occasional porn clip, put up Christmas decorations where others can see them, got involved in a secret society that encourages people to do their own thinking, and destroyed every single piece of littera-trash I had. And I will watch a R movie if I see fit. I have gone online to steal songs from LimeWire (mostly those songs that I had to throw away as a witless and cannot find the 12" single version, or any version, otherwise). And I have bought other songs, especially Christmas songs and those I had to throw away upon becoming a witless. Hopefully, the effect will be the Unholy Spirit being stopped, zero results in field circus, and boasting sessions where fewer than 10 attend.

What the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, Inc. fails to realize is that Achan's sin resulted in a removal of Jehovah's blessing from Israel because the nation was dedicated. A person born into the nation had no choice, they were a member of a dedicated nation, the forefathers accepted the dedication on behalf of the entire nation of Israel current and future generations. The willful sin of the individual could result in God's favor being witheld from the group.

Christians on the other hand, make a personal dedication. The willful sin of an individual would result in the individual losing God's favor. The covering up of the sin by appointed heads (ie elders ignoring the past sin of murder while punishing for the current sin of tobacco use) might be a different story ... but then you have to assume that the Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses ever had God's Spirit in the first place.

This man had to be disfellowshiped if the "spirit," or spirituality of the congregation, based upon God's Word, was to be saved. Otherwise, ‘a little leaven would ferment the whole lump,' that is, a spiritually corrupting influence would permeate the congregation and Jehovah would cut off that congregation. Today it is just as vital that the congregation's spirit, based on Jehovah's inspired Word, be saved.-1 Cor. 5:6.
