Well, I'm finally reading [ahem...] some material that discusses the old 1991 Elders Handbook...

    Here's some impressions I've gotten...

(reading between the lines, of course...)

The sections in the first few chapters , in which the reader is given situations and asked how to handle these if they come up - very funny, if one reads between the lines...

"A young person whose parents are not in the TRUTHâ„¢ begins to associate..."

No "official" response given, but my first between-the-lines response was,

"Aha!! PREY!!!... Errrrr, 'pray' - for the young person's spiritual development..."

More later - must snooze now...

    Undercover said:

Then I decided to compare chapter titles. And that right there said it all. The so-called "loving provision" from the Governing Body is now a "legal handbook" from the Legal Department.

Thank you for posting these for comparison, Undercover. It strikes me as sad, really... but in a way... I am hopeful. Hopeful that more might see the mind-controlling publishing company for what it really is.

Bumping this thread - hopefully will stimulate more discussion...

This has the potential to be a REALLY good thread...

A good observation Undercover, the old one at least was written in the style of fellow shepherds of the flock...this one is indeed a work book , largely for judicial matters

Just funny to know: you who have a downloaded copy are well ahead of most elders, most of the non-english congregations in Europe still have not received them yet. Yet another proof that you have to be on a big no-no website to know 1st what is going on the inside, and this months before the official news network of the biggest printing and publishing group in the world informs their workers. How sad for the poor workers.

But to be honest, what to expect of a group of top-shepherds, who, after many years of gathering the expertise of thousands of other shepherds, writes a book about how to take care of the flock, and at least 70% is about procedures whether or not to get rid of a sheep. Not to mention there are extremely few pages discussing the caring bit. This is far away of the advice of THE specialist in shepherding, who said some 2000 years ago: "If a certain man comes to have a hundred sheep and one of them gets strayed, will he not leave the ninety-nine upon the mountains and set out on a search for the one that is straying? 13 And if he happens to find it, I certainly tell YOU, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that have not strayed. 14 Likewise it is not a desirable thing with my Father who is in heaven for one of these little ones to perish." Matt 18:12-14 (NWT with references, published by the WTBS of NY). This shepherd repeated several times and showed he did EVERYTHING to make sure no sheep would get lost, and he provided quite some tips on how to go about it. As a contrast: Many are the congregations where the flock has been decreasing 30% or more, and the elder-shepherds still ask why this is happening...

The new manual explains in great deal that a shepherd should exchange his caring attitude for the battering rod. Shepherding just saw its Industrial Revolution, where sheep are forced to become more effective production units, or else...

Good points, Hoffnung, but I'll ALWAYS remember what my Wiccan friend mentioned to me....

She said something to the effect of, "most people read the bible, the New Testament, and they think those parables of the 'sheep and the shepherd' are sooooo touching and demonstrative of the love "god" and "his son" have, for them....

    But they forget...

In real life - ESPECIALLY in ancient Israel - the shepherd watched the flock for HIS benefit, NOT for the benefit of the sheep..."

In other words: Lambchops, mutton, sheepskin cloaks, wool sheared for garments...

    Words to consider...

Interesting, it is exactly as you say, the new manual is much more direct. I do not see why it should be secret - it is basically a procedures manual, as others have said.

Wow, thanks for pointing out the differences between the chapters in the old book and the new one! The new book's chapters sound absolutely legalistic! Very perceptive of you to see the differences so clearly! Thank you for bringing them to our attention. How very eye-opening!

    Good point staple 99.

The thing that really makes me angry is the fact that the poor shmuck who come before this "court" has no access to the legal rules that he is being judged by. There is no one to speak up for him, no one to help him avoid the bear traps.

The same people put the case for the prosecution and the case for the defence and are the judges. This all done with a greasy patronising smile just to show the lurve they are showing as they hang you out to dry.

Not that I have experienced this of course...........
