I was something of an apologist as well initially – I think that it is human nature to try to rationalise and justify a situation , especially when the alternative (being shunned by friends & family) is so unpalatable. Sometimes ex-JWs do exaggerate criticisms as well , which makes it easy to poke holes in some arguments.
For me it was a bit like trying to stay in a marriage for the sake of the kids when you suspect that your husband or wife (aka the WTBTS) is playing around. You can spend ages making excuses , fooling yourself , denying the facts , refusing to believe what your friends & neighbours are telling you etc but when you finally find him / her in bed with the maid / milkman then it is time to be honest with yourself & move on.
