I was going to guess that September 1, 1879 was the first issue of the Watchtower but that wasn't it. First WT was July 1, 1879.

There is no real good reason that I know of for September 1 being the start of the service year. Maybe so they can have end-of-year pioneer schools during the summer month of August?

They have children returning to school in September. So, they want to make a new circus year at the same time to put pressure on those children to start pio-sneering so they can flunk another school year.

AGM-- I alway associated it with a fiscal year.

September season startup: I assumed it was based on harvesting season being in the summer, fall is a time to make an accounting

When was the WTS incorporated? I would say that has probably a lot to do with it. We are talking about a business here and most businesses have a different annual year than the Jan-Dec of the calendar.

After a bit of sleuthing I found this:

On February 16, 1881 Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society was formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA for the purpose of organizing the printing and distribution of religious tracts written by Charles Taze Russell, [ 3 ] founder of what is now known as the Bible Student movement. [ 28 ] The society's formation was announced in the April 1881 Zion's Watch Tower. [ 29 ] William Henry Conley, a Pittsburgh businessman, was appointed president, while Russell served as Secretary-Treasurer. [ 3 ]

Three years later, on December 15, 1884, the society was incorporated as Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society in Pennsylvania as a non-profit, non-stock corporation with Russell as president.

So it wasn't the 1881 date of Feb or April, or the 1884 date of Dec. BUT. . . check this one out:

On September 19, 1896 the name of the corporation was changed to Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

So what do you think? Could it be that date that makes the annual new year?

My guess is that this coincides with the fiscal year the WTS uses for tax filing. I would venture a guess they file their 990 for 9/1-8/31.
