I agree, McAfee is garbage. For businesses I recommend Trend Micro and good security polices (restrict admin access, Internet Content filtering), for home users Microsoft's new free one is good. I also like ESET Nod32 as it's low overhead on a system.

which would be a terrible idea if you aren't behind a router/firewall.
I always tell people to use a router or firewall but it's surprising how many won't listen. They won't keep their AV definitions up to date either and they turn off their Windows firewall. A few times I've used group policies on non-domain computers, usually to prevent some people from turning off their firewalls. I only do this to habitual offenders. I can't recall now if the home versions of Vista & Win 7 have local group policies available. I always deploy Enterprise or Ultimate versions, and rarely see the home versions.
You don't have to go to porn sites to get viruses or other malware. Our Research department has the highest rate of malware infections, and they're mostly researching political stuff.

I must admit that I feel for McAfee. Sort of like rooting for the underdog.
They have been fighting a loosing battle with Norton Anti Virus for many years. I'm afraid this might be the thing that finally puts them down.

I ve been hit by this and unable to get online at all via my PC. Fortunately, I have this iPad, but I'm experiencing deep frustration because an iPad will only do so much.
I discovered the source of the problem only yesterday, when in desperation I went to my ISP's website and saw the notice about McAfee. I checked my DAT file. Yes, 6807, one of those affected. They give a fix, but although I manage to get through stage 1, my computer won't go to stage 2.
I'm thinking Mac, and wonder if anyone has experience of changing from Windows to Mac and how easy it is? All ideas gratefully received, and thanks in advance.

when I downloaded microsoft free security essentials, I stopped having problems and it was FREE

I bought Kaspersky a couple of years ago and have had no problem. My laptop came with XP and has McAfee pop up fake warnings etc trying to get me to download it.
