Evening Grosbeaks. Sometimes erroneously called Yellow Finches. Beautiful. I buy 25 lbs. of Black oil sunflower seeds for $16.00. They are going through a bag a week right now. Today I took fresh water out to the bird bath and one of them sat right there on the rim and watched me while I refilled it, then jumped in and took a bath.

perhaps you could plant some of those seeds then you or the birds can harvest the heads

Wow Gregor, I'm envious. My feeders have been left for now with just an occasional Jay or Cardinal.

Cool! The robins, house finches, and red-winged blackbirds are back (among many others). I love hearing the bird songs.

Lucky you! We have regular goldfinches here and they love liatris (blazing star)! I get a whole flock here in fall and they are quite comical to watch. I always leave my flowers all winter so the birds have something to eat in case the feeders are empty for awhile.

I like to watch birds, too. I was thinking the other day how I haven't seen a Meadowlark since I left the farm on the Illinois prairie in 1970. Redwing blackbirds I see from time to time, but not Meadowlarks. We have burrowing owls where I live and you can walk up to within 6 feet of them and they just stare you down. I was watching a big colony of fugitive Monk Parrots last week. They build a big communal nest about 30 ft up in a tree. They were as happy as OutLaw with a case of Molson beer and a bucket of KFC.

There were a lot of grosbeak here but as the clear cutting took their feeding and nesting sites they seem to be heading to feeders for nutrition.

They are known here as a deep woods bird and are truly wonderful with a very pretty melody when wanting their food to be delivered...

Last year had two swooping barn swallows - deep, deep blue, almost black and so graceful wanting to build a nest in my mailbox so I had to tape off the opening and they went -- hope they come back this year -- havent been around for years...

    Very cool!

Something I like to buy is a 40 lb sack of corn used by deer hunters. The big birds swallow the corn whole and the small birds break the kernels into smaller pieces and eat those.

    Nelly,

I could grow some sunflowers but they look like hell by the time they go to seed then I have to deal with the dead stalks, etc. My garden area is not very large. Most of the inexpensive mixes contain a lot of millet which most birds seem to ignore

    Else,

feed corn is pretty cheap, I will try some but I already have a squirrel problem. Right now there are two of them who access the feeder from some overhanging branches of a big walnut tree. I will be pruning them back today.

    Moshe,

We had a visiting group of red wing black birds a couple of weeks ago that hung around for two days. Very

striking color with the yellow band on the red epaulets.

I also have feed trays just below the three small windows in my tool shed. I take the G kids in there and we can watch the birds close up.
