BTS: "It would seem, however, that belief conveys a measure of evolutionary fitness."

First, let me modify the word "belief" to "false belief". Yes, there may have been, under certain circumstances in the past, a measure of evolutionary fitness for a limited amount of delusional thinking. However, in modern societies where mass religion; the state and corporate enterpises create the beliefs of Homo Imbecilitas, we are as genetically fit for long term survival as a sleepwalker camping out on the Grand Canyon.

That's because they spend much more time thinking how to prove "something" that doesn't exist, doesn't exist.

    LOL at JD !

I think too ,that us poor Atheists have to take responsibility for our errors and bad actions, so we spend time meditating on where we went wrong, and how to improve our own situation, surely a better idea than loading all responsibilty on some imaginary Sky-daddy.

It would seem, however, that belief conveys a measure of evolutionary fitness. . . . BTS

A sense of well-being created by mental delusion may provide an avenue for stress relief . . . that does not prove a long lasting evolutionary benefit will result, and that such a mechanism will provide evolutionary survival benefits at all. Evolution does not possess foreknowledge and does not remain static. Belief might just as well be an undesirable side effect of increased brain complexity yet to be phased out.
