Oompa, it was the same here...no one ever talked about anything JW. Even when it came to the Sunday meeting, someone would ask if anyone found a meeting, then someone would respond "I called a KH but no one answered." and that was the end of that...not even a group study of the WT.

Oh and Field Service...no one even knew what that was when on vacation and I've vacationed with a LOT with the witnesses. The only time we did the text or something was when it wasn't a real vacation but a trip of a "spiritual nature". On those trips, I'm surprised folks didn't stir pages of the WT into their coffee.

I can even remember one host telling an over eager brother to drop the "spiritual" talk he was ruining the party.

Except for some parties where we played bible pictionary (which was fun for the jws who actually knew something about the bible), spiritual discussion was nil unless you consider gossip abour various people's "spiritual standing" spiritual.

I can remember elders going on vacation and never seeing the inside of a kh the whole time, not cracking a magazine or a book, let alone going in field circus.

The absence of talking about "spiritual" food on social occasions has been a noticeable feature of JW life for decades. A onetime JW friend of mine went on an overseas trip to the Scandanavian countries in the late 1970s. On returning home, he lamented the "state" of the witnesses in these countries, noting that, while the young JWs in particular socialize together all the time, they never discuss "the truth". I asked him how this was different from the younger JWs in New Zealand - and I swear he took offence at my question. Yet, it was plain to see that the younger ones in New Zealand were also shockingly indifferent about discussing anything spiritual when they socialised together. They'd talk about anything but "the truth". Little wonder that some of their get-togethers got really out of hand - even by worldly standards!
