Can someone explain how an otherwise very intelligent successful handsome man such as Tom Cruise could totally and without shame buy into Scientology? I could understand if he had been born into it and indoctrinated from birth. But, really, HOW does this happen?
And what exactly does this mean?

I think it starts with this cult telling people that they can become God. It fits with Cruise's personality to a 't'.

I'm thinking of the time when 'everyone' believed in the Roman gods, and some newbies came and said, "Naw, there's only 1 God, born of a rib woman, who caused us all pain a few thousand years ago by eating a magic fruit because a talking snake told her to, then impregnated a virgin with himself."
How does someone become a Scientologist? Probably they were believers already and just shifted to a new set of beliefs.
Skepticism is a protective factor against malicious groups, IMO.
