I had been taught that the tradition of clinking glasses together originated at feasts of the aristocracy.
In order to prove that nobody was drinking from a poisoned chalice, everybody clinked glasses together to spill some of the contents into the glass of the other guests.

Giving a speech to honor someone with a toast just puffs them up with pride, like birthdays, Mother's Day, and clapping too loud at baptisms.
Pride is of the Devil.
Therefore, toasting is demonic.
