I saw a documentary about the 10 plagues some time back. I don't remember the details but it suggested that maybe the water to blood plague was actually an algae or some other natural occurance that caused the water to turn red.

Assuming 6 billion people alive today multiplied by an average of 5 litres of blood per person equals about 30 million cubic metres of blood.

I read that the average discharge rate of the Nile today is about 300 million cubic litres a day.

If the Nile turned to blood (which it obviously must have as the Bible says so) then that is probably the most amount of blood in human history.

Big J couldn't have had much regard for the sanctity of it.

In that climate, you need to drink huge quantities of water or DIE, within three days or so.

If all the water, in wells and jars and in the river had turned to blood everybody would be dead before the next plague.

Red algal blooms were well known on the Nile. The account is full of contradictions.

    Now here's something to consider.

When God turned the waters to blood and every vessel in Egypt that had water in was turned to blood, where did the magic pracicing priests get their water from to do the same thing?

    Exodus 7

    Blood: The First Plague
7:19God said to Moses, 'Tell Aaron to take his staff and extend his hand over the waters of Egypt - over their rivers, their canals, their reservoirs, and every place where water is kept - and [the water] shall turn into blood. There will be blood throughout all Egypt, even in wooden [barrels] and stone [jars].'
7:20Moses and Aaron did exactly as God had instructed. [Aaron] held the staff up, and then struck the Nile's water in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials. The Nile's water was transformed into blood.
7:21The fish in the Nile died, and the river became so polluted that the Egyptians were no longer able to drink the Nile's water. There was blood everywhere in Egypt.
7:22However, when the master symbolists of Egypt were able to produce the same effect with their hidden arts, Pharaoh became obstinate. He would not pay attention to [Moses and Aaron], just as God had predicted.
