The witless "marriages" are a sham. It is about two people that disregard any physical traits and only notice "spiritual" ones. Effectively, all they need do is throw together two pio-sneers, one of whom is a hounder, and call that a "marriage". You are not supposed to even notice physical beauty or personality that goes well with yours.
