IMO, Islam is defined by the behaviour of its followers. If Muslims commit acts of terrorism (ie, suicide bombings, flying planes into tall buildings causing mass destruction and mass murder), then it becomes part and parcel of how people in general define Islam. If Islamic clerics call for the destruction of "infidels" (ie, non-Muslims), it becomes part of how people in general define Islam. If Islamic clerics expect non-Muslims to conformsubmit to their values (Halal food in school cafeterias, non-Muslim women wearing the hijab in the presence of Muslim men) and try to pass laws to impose these values on non-Muslims, it becomes part of how people in general define Islam.

If Islam wants to have a better public image, then they need to do something about its renegade followers who are giving the religion a very bad reputation.

Mary sent me an email yesterday - and it's funny exactly because of how true and foreboding it is.

    Subject: Teaching - Maths

    1. Teaching Maths In 1970A logger sells a lorry load of timber for £1000.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the selling price.
    What is his profit?

    2. Teaching Maths In 1980 A logger sells a lorry load of timber for £1000.

    What is his profit?

    3. Teaching Maths In 1990 A logger sells a lorry load of timber for £1000.

    4. Teaching Maths In 2000
A logger sells a lorry load of timber for £1000.
His cost of production is £800 and his profit is £200.
Your assignment: Underline the number 200.

    5. Teaching Maths In 2008 A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is totally selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of £200.

What do you think of this way of making a living?

Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers. If you are upset about the plight of the animals in question counselling will be available. )

It isn't politically correct to criticize Jews for Israel's behaviour - it isn't even correct! Israel is a secular state, not a Jewish one.

And believe me, there are plenty more Muslims in the world than there are terrorists who say that there is no true Islamic state on this planet - not even 'Saudi' Arabia. Sadly, as Scully says, the image of Islam is tarnished by the nutcases running out of control and the silent majority doing nothing to halt the rot.

It isn't, of course. Many ethnic Jews are very skeptical about their zionistic peers.

Btw, if you say "politically correct", what political ideology are you talking about or have you just made up the claim yourself?

    So true, leaving. What irony!

    Speaking in generalities:

The Chinese were exploited horribly as slave laborers in the US 150 yrs ago. They have overcome it.

The Irish were discriminated against in Ireland and then, just a hundred yrs ago, here in the US. They have overcome it.

The Japanese had their property and businesses confiscated and put into relocation camps. They have overcome it.

The Jews have been discriminated against for centuries and marked for eradication by many even now. From Hitler to Iran, Syria, etc. They are overcoming it and being hated for it.

The Blacks whose forebears were enslaved in this country have been given more advantages since MLK and the Great Society, affirmitive action, etc. but still don't seem to be overcoming it. Some of their spokesmen (Sharpton, Jackson) have made sure that the election of Obama is not taken as a symbol that they are now equal, no, no. "There is still so much to be done to right the wrongs". Why?

The Clenching of the Israeli Fist

The Israelis, who have survived by paying close attention to their situation, understand that they live at the edge of a cliff, just above jagged rocks and hungry alligators. Their fractious neighbors can continue to lose wars, paying out blood and treasure forever. If Israel loses one war, it's over for the Jewish state.
