I heard the story once about a professor who was leading a seminar counseling. In a room full , he wrote this on a flipchart: "I can’t do anything by myself. I can only do what my dad tells me to do." He then asked the folks in the room to analyze the man who said this.

The professor got the expected responses: "This person obviously has no willpower." "He needs to grow a spine and get a life." "I bet he still lives at home." "He needs to get out from under his dad’s shadow and become his own person." Then the professor revealed who it was

CALIBER- Interesting thread. I would say for instance in the case of some of my customers in my janitorial business - even though I'm self-employed if my customer makes a special request of me I wouldn't say " I obey " them and do it , but I " comply " or "cooperate "with their request. They are an authority to me only in that they pay me money to clean their building. I do a service for them , but they don't " own " me . Once I'm done with the job- I'm gone to other customers.

We " obey " the laws like traffic laws because they make sense and protect us. And we'll get a bloody ticket costing us out the ying-yang if we " disobey ". So , yes I dislike the term obey because it is indicative of someone " owning " you or being " over " you. It's one reason I never fit in very well as a witness because I am an independent thinker - and the WT society doesn't like that

In marriage... do you act and obey out of love or duty?.. Or is it rather the duty that love creates ?

The use of force alone is but temporary. It may subdue for a moment; but it does not remove the necessity of subduing again; and a nation is not governed, which is perpetually to be conquered. - Edmund Burke

"love does not subdue but overwhelms ! "

I believe in God but I’d much rather live with people who care about each other than those who only care about God or heaven.

It depends on the marriage and the couple. And the day.

I told you, Cal, it has been easier for authorities, whether religious or secular, to use fear to control rather than force. And I would include ions of ages of men trying to control women due to sexual desire and women's ability to say NO.

    Agreed.

God's love respects our need to grow and come to the right decisions, eventually, out of love. He does not operate on the fear factor. Fear does not motivate people in true love. Fear is the opposite of love. I prefer the company of truly loving people whose love comes naturally from within in appreciation for the many blessings we as human beings enjoy.

"When we all relate to each other as we would like to receive if our roles are reversed then only truly at that

point we come to understand the indispensable relationship between obedience , love and co-operation" ~Cal

A life lived in fear is half lived.
Fear is the parent of cruelty. and No fate is worse than a life without a love.

And it's likely someone with more fundamentalist beliefs will come and try to use that old WT brainwash about fear not really meaning fear.

Caliber, are you able to post with this unexpected redirect?

I believe that obedience seen in the proper frame of reference and spirit of the motivation is a natural

"by-product "of love as opposed to fear and in that sense can be beautiful and fulfilling !
