i have to go through the procedure next montjh, was wondering how much pain is involved? Not something i really want to do but it seems better than a bridge? those who have had the expereince what do you say about the initial beginnings of the tooth implant, pain etc, uncomfortable, eating, soup, need someone to drive you or what?

Stage one for me was inserting the post; that was the surgical part. And yes, I needed someone to drive me home. I don't remember any special amount of pain associated with it, certainly nothing more than what I experienced with a crown. The post had to sit for about six months, if I remember correctly. After that, I went back in, they set the actual tooth, and I haven't had a problem since.

Go for the implant. I'm a hygienist, and I would definitely go for it. But... please take care of it, exactly how they tell you to. Think of it as a beautiful diamond ring. Keep it clean accordingly. shiny and gleaming.

ps...I have seen ads for them but they have one implant screw on each side of the mouth and the false teeth look like they just snap on to the screw..I guess that's if you need more than one?
But if that one lady needed thirteen they must have done each tooth separately?...wow 13 times $6,000. no way...
I'll keep my crowns.

Currently I'm in sales but spent a couple of decades managing dental offices. My last dental gig was 7 years as Office Manager/Treatment Coordinator for a Prosthedontist specializing in Implant Dentistry.

Implants on each side of the arch with 'snap-on' dentures are called 'Implant Dentures' and they are usually better serviced with 4 implants per arch (total of 8 for full-mouth) and the removable snap-on denture over them. For people who have been wearing dentures for most of their life, this is a god-send. Unfortunately it's still a tougher road when working with lower dentures, even with the implant variety. When lower teeth are lost, the bony ridge flattens out. This makes for almost nothing for a denture to grab onto. In this situation, Implant Dentures can dramatically improve a person's quality of life. I saw one man in his late 50's/early 60's transform almost overnight when he could resume eating a normal meal. His first BBQ with the new teeth made him almost giddy. It changed his marriage for the better, too, as his depression lifted and he felt 30 years younger.

For this woman we did some individual teeth and several implant bridges (3-4 'teeth' anchored onto 2 implants). As I recall her case cost approximately $55,000. This was 10 years ago and, believe it or not, we offered a 'volume discount' on the lab work (crown and bridges). Very nice case when it was completed.

Hi Besty, how are you Sweatpea doing? Shame we didn't get to speak more that night. Thanks for the heads up, I'm probably going to have the procedure in the next couple of weeks. I don't know whats going to hurt more, the implant or parting with 3 grand.....ouch!! Peace out THE BORG

I used to work for a Periodontics/Implant specialist. If you use a reputable doctor- one that's into continued education, a dental implant (and bone harvesting- if needed) can feel just like a normal tooth. The doctor I worked with used the latest equipment- and a microscope during oral surgeries. I can't think of one patient that had the procedure who wasn't glad they sprung for getting an implant and saving their other natural teeth. IMO implants look more natural than bridgework also but you still have to take care of the implant because you can lose it just like any other tooth if your dental hygiene isn't up to par.
