I say there ought to be a national price cap on a gallon of gas at $4 a gallon, I think the government should tax the heck out of oil company profits, and then use that money to give a monthly gas subsidy check of $200 to anyone who makes less than $50,000 a year. As a republican, I am normally against extra taxes, but in this instance I feel something must be done to help the working man.

Or if you are a rich republican and don't like the idea of helping poor people, then set the price cap at $2 a gallon and ditch the subsidy idea.

All price caps do is create shortages. If a product is not profitable, people won't make it or sell it.

If you really like your car, spend 2 or 3 grand and rebuild the engine, revamp the brakes and drive line and repaint it. You'll come out much cheaper than buying a new car, have a car you like AND still get great mileage. Even if you get a new one that gets say 40mpg just figure how long it'll take to recover your investment. I've got an 87 BMW M6 with over 400k on it. I spent $7000 rebuilding it (engine, clutch and drive train and fresh paint. I'd rather drive it than spend 40 - 50k on a new one plus it's a clasic. If you take care of it there's no limit to it's life expectancy. chappy

5go... I don't drive a gas guzzler... that's the point. I want a car that is as good on gas as the one I have, and at the same time is roomy enough to accomodate all the stuff I have to carry with me for my job.... My car is basic...no frills. It's a 4 cylinder engine.

BTS I'll check out the Kia. Thanks!

Hyundai and Kia are own by Hyundai.

I have a no frills 2001 Elantra with 248,000 miles on getting 30 mpg hwy 25 city. Which it isn't a small car it's not large one either. The newer ones are better. The Kia version is called the Spetra BTW.

I had a 1997 Kia Sephia. Bought new. What a great little car. I really abused it. Used it on construction sites for a year in 99 when I did a stint as an electrician. Trunk full of tools. I used to rag on it like a rally sport on dirt roads. Lots of fun. I sold it in 2006. Other than clogged injectors once (probably bad gas) it never gave any trouble other than things than normally wear out, brakes clutches etc.

J-G is now a Socialist! He wants government to redistribute wealth.

Dennis Kucinich told me to tell you "Welcome, comrade".

Next thing you know, his avatar will sport a red cowboy hat....
