It's the 21st century. Can you still find yourself punished, even sentenced to death, for blasphemy?

Pakistani sentenced to die for blasphemy

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A Pakistani judge sentenced a Muslim man to death Wednesday on charges he insulted Islam's Prophet Muhammad, a court official said.

Falk Sher, a court administrator, said Judge Shoaib Ahmad Roomi also sentenced the man, Shafeeq Latif, to life in prison and fined him $75,000 on a separate charge of desecrating pages of Islam's holy book, the Quran, in 2006.

Latif was accused of making derogatory remarks about Muhammad.

The trial was held in the eastern city of Sialkot after police arrested him in a nearby village.

Latif's lawyer was not immediately available for comment, but Sher said the defendant had the right to appeal.

Under Pakistan's blasphemy laws, anyone who insults Muhammad can be punished by death. Scores of people, including Muslims and minority Christians, are facing trial under the laws, which human rights groups have demanded be abolished.

New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the government on Tuesday to abolish the death penalty in a country where nearly a quarter of all inmates are on death row.

    Greetings, Never ...

Long time no talk; sorry it's been so long.

The first thing to come to my mind was "blaspheming" the GB.

I don't recall any JW ever calling down evil on the name of God, thereby getting disfellowshiped. But what happens if he bad-mouths the elders, or, worse, questions the "humble and obedient slave" appointed by Christ over all his belongings?

    He gets "stoned"!

    Thanks, friend.

Is Pakistan a theocracy? They certainly have theocratic laws, and this is very disheartening. Pakistan is supposedly America's ally. Does America have no influence? Can't they call for an end to such laws, and invite Pakistan to join modern society?

Why not allow the offended mighty deities/prophets to avenge themselves in their own time, in their own way?

Blasphemy laws only reinforce the uselessness of those they are designed to "protect".

Very immoral to threaten death for putting down some religious deity. First, what if that deity actually did fail the person that is putting it down, and the putdown is for that failure? And there are those who choose to believe in another deity (or none at all).

I guess they can do that if they are Islam, and want everyone in the country to become Islam. I heard of the Catholic church doing that during the First Dark Ages. No doubt the Washtowel Slaveholdery would like to do that to anyone that speaks out against Jehovah Baghead or their own Filthful and Disgraceful Slavebugger.

For "some reason" they cannot defend themselves, so we have to do it for 'em.
