IF I did the right thing why do I feel so bad?

When you are continually told that a course of action is extremely wicked and vile, it takes getting past it (which often takes quite a few trials and guilt feelings) in order to do what you know is right but were told was wrong. And the Filthful and Disgraceful Slavebugger does that effectively--they know people are going to see through their lies, and they don't want people to integrate their thinking with the real truth. They also don't want others to start seeing the lies en masse (the organization would come down quickly if that happened). Hence the rules, in the harshest possible terms, to protect the Washtowel Slaveholdery.
