    Hi ex-smoker,

    I'm not familiar with too many English translations but I think the New Jerusalem Bible and the New Revised Standard Version are generally good.

    I have fallen in love with THE MESSAGE bible.

    I read passages I've read a thousand times and suddenly---only in the MESSAGE bible does the "meaning" unfold like a puzzle solved.

    I love this bible!

    Read the 23rd Psalm and see if you don't think it "says something" you've never quite heard before.

    Psalm 23 (The Message)

    Psalm 23
    A David Psalm
    1-3 God , my shepherd! I don't need a thing.
    You have bedded me down in lush meadows,
    you find me quiet pools to drink from.
    True to your word,
    you let me catch my breath
    and send me in the right direction.

    4 Even when the way goes through
    Death Valley,
    I'm not afraid
    when you walk at my side.
    Your trusty shepherd's crook
    makes me feel secure.

    5 You serve me a six-course dinner
    right in front of my enemies.
    You revive my drooping head;
    my cup brims with blessing.

    6 Your beauty and love chase after me
    every day of my life.
    I'm back home in the house of God
    for the rest of my life.

    So have I, Terry. I've placed it in my FAVORITES.

    How about this take on the passage with which we've been beaten across the head many a time?

    From The Message Bible:

    Hebrews 10:24, 25 Let's see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.

    It doesn't say anything about "works" or "meetings," does it?

    Try all of them. There's features on this site where you can cross compare different translations for clarity and accuracy.

    I'll second that

    If you can actually find the original Jerusalem Bible I would go with that. I got mine used off of amazon. It has lots of foot notes that take advantage of modern textual criticism.

    From what I have heard from the KJV crowd, the ESV is a really good bible if you must read something other than a KJV.

    ESV= English Standard Version
