So I am having a "conversation" with my mom about how
we are living during the end of the world and how close Armageddon
is and whatnot, and in making her case she goes:

"And I heard something on the news the other day about this
study that they did on how many people leave their religion.
It was really high! And they weren't leaving to go to another
religion, they were just becoming nonreligious!"

Ok, that's the setup... here is her gem of a interpretation:

"It just goes to show how FED UP people are getting with false
    religion!"

I was stunned. I almost let in slide in the interest of peace,
but it was just too glaring.

"Mom, I hate to tell you, but the highest attrition rate found
was Jehovah's Witnesses, with only 30% loyalty."

"Well, I don't know where they got that number from."

"They got it from the same study you just quoted!!!"

"Oh. Well, I bet they didn't take into account the number
of witnesses that come BACK after leaving."

At this point I gave up. Brick walls give me a nasty headache.

I have NEVER known a jw to return after having completely left the org. Where does she get her statistics on this matter from?

She evidently doesn't subscribe to JWD now, does she....

    Cognitive dissonance land.

Your mom is just the typical jw. Facts, logic, reasoning, means nothing to them. They just come up with some off the wall comments as though they are the truth. They have to be right even when they think they may be wrong. Then when everything is said and done, she will tell all her jw friends how she had to straighten you out. You can't reason with a closed mind.

The condition of humans reinforcing the ground on which they are standing is a common one!

It's why we do what we do here!

Each of our realities is all we have for now!

Shifting locations is frought with fear and insecurity and ruin.

And the WT keep buttressing their stance so it's frustrating to say the least!

Maybe look for small escape routes to consider or pull an odd support which shows how divinity is not their 24hr security!

Studies show that all studies are right except the studies I disagree with. In that case they need more study.

JWs are the champs of cherry picking. // Studies show.

I don't suppose she's ever heard these figures either:

The proportion of mental illness among jws is higher than that of the prison population in the US.

The divorce rate among jws is slightly higher than that of worldly people.

The majority of contested custody cases involve jws.

From what I have seen and experienced. Few come back, very few.
