Why have a trial? Because if they were just eliminated, worldly outcry would condemn the US and would outdo the atrocities that the terroists committed.
But that was not a problem in Bible times. There was no Constitution, or internet, or tv, or radio, or newspaper. People didn't care when their enemies were killed.
And if anything the Bible says about Samson was true, he should have been killed on sight, even by our modern standards.

Well, there's a fascinating study of contrasts in ch. 8 and 9 of Joshua. In the first, the Israelite army entraps the city of Ai's army by faking a retreat, drawing them into the open, and the Israelites thereupon exterminate every man, woman, and child in the city. Then in the next chapter, Joshua is prevented from killing off the Gibeonites by a ruse they pulled on him; the "rule" here that constrained Joshua is that he made an oath to his god to spare them, even tho he was unaware of who they really were. Joshua could not slaughter them as he killed all the other Canaanites...that would have been murder. So even in the bloodthirsty book of Joshua, it depended on the situation.
