ACCORING TO GOOD NEWS MAGAZNE,WINGE SUN DISK IS LINKED WITH BA'AL WORSHIP.

THIS WAS CONCERNING JEZEBEL'S RING THEY FOUND.

The sun disk has nothing to do with Baal worship. Baal was not a sun god.

It was associated with the Aten in Egypt. It was also used in royal iconography. It appears in the seals of Judean kings, including Hezekiah, if I am not mistaken.

Russell used it because Egyptology was the big thing in the late 19th century in popular culture, and he already believed (wrongly) that Egyptian things like the Great Pyramid pointed to Christ.

Russell used Egyptian symbols such as the Sun Disc and the Great Pyramid partly as a means to get people to buy his books who would not otherwise be interested in them!

In the 1920's the publics interest in things Egyptian had decreased, and so Judge Rutherford discarded all the Pyramid teachings as they were of no further use to the Organization.

Here is some more info on the winged sun disk and its use in ancient Judea, as a symbol for royal power:

Russell did not link this symbol to either Baal or the Masons, as some suppose. He saw it in the "eyes" of Malachia 4:2: "And to YOU who are in fear of my name the sun of righteousness will certainly shine forth, with healing in its wings..."

On the imagery in Malachi 4:2, see also:

"The expression shemesh tsedaqa 'sun of righteousness' has generated much discussion. There is little reason to doubt the virtually unanimous judgment of commentators that the common Near Eastern depiction of the winged sun disk contributed to the use of the expression here" (J. Glen Taylor, Yahweh and the Sun [JSOT Supplement, No. 111; Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 1993], p. 212; cf. B. Glazier-McDonald, Malachi: The Divine Messenger [SBLDS, 98; Atlanta: Scholars Press, 1987], pp. 238-239, Baldwin, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, p. 250, J.M.P. Smith, A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Malachi [ICC, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1912), p. 80).

"Both Malachi 3:20 [4:2 Eng.] and Isaiah 58:8 mention healing, a blessing evidently rooted in the old royal idea that the monarch provides well-being for his subjects. Finally, the royal iconography of the winged sun disk compares well with the description of the royal scion in Malachi 3:20" (Mark S. Smith, Early History of God [San Francisco: Harper Collins, 2002], p. 156).

So, in fact, Pastor Russell was not off the mark in associating the winged sun disk with the scripture in Malachi; the two are most likely directly related.

I have a study a friend of mi9ne did where there is historical evidence to show that the symbol was used by the Jews. It is found among their ruins.
