I was walking to my car after work, it was very cold (low 40's F) and getting dark and a beggar woman walks up to me sobbing and crying about being cold. She didn't want to go through another very cold night light last night (low 30's F) and she needed money to get into a local shelter. Yes, it costs $12 per night to get into a homeless shelter... that's Texas for ya.

I normally don't give money to beggars because I have seen them abuse my generosity. Every now and then I might give a dollar bill. This time, because of the near freezing temps late at night I decided to giver her a $10 bill so she could get into the shelter.

When she saw the $10 bill she instantly stopped sobbing and perked up with a big "Thanks!" .

Maybe I'm a bit out of touch, but it seems like it should take awhile for a sobbing person to regain their composure.

    I think I've been had.

    It'll come back to you.

    Was she hot?

You could have let her stay with you.

Perhaps you were taken advantage of; perhaps not.

You did what your heart said to do at the time. I tend to follow my "gut" too.

If she scammed you, she was a bad girl.

But either way, you were a good boy.

(I'm never sure what to do in those situations either, Man. If $10 isn't the end of the world for you, then no biggee, right? At the very least you made her happier today. Either she's warmer, or drunker, or higher, or whatever.)

I think you were duped. If you could have, you should have asked what shelter and gone there to pay for it yourself. We here in the Vancouver have a massive drug problem , and it always gets spent on more drugs. At least your heart is in the right place. Most homeless here sleep in bank lobbys with the machines.

You shoulda written out a check to the homeless shelter. That always works.

I thought this thread was about being abducted by aliens... Me too, ooh you were probably duped - I think my dear country takes the cake for this one. We have them on every corner, at every traffic light, you name it. The other day I took my granny to the casino, thought we'd go blow some cash, anyway I win a little jackpot of R 1 000 (zar) so this woman next to me comments on how lucky I am. She also gives me a sob story about how she doesn't have money to get home and needs R 10 to catch a taxi. I pretty much tell her she shouldn't be in the casino if she can't afford to get home, but I still gave her the money, just in case she was telling the truth.
