i was thinking about the newspaper article that said that jws stick to no blood transfusions because nobody else does it and so this marks them as different. but there are other religions that don't allow any medical treatment so i'm guessing that would include blood medicine.

then i started to think about other things eg christmas - plenty of other religions don't celebrate christmas

war - plenty of conscientious objectors

preaching - other religions do it.

    etc etc etc

and i came round to birthdays..are jws truly unique in this - does anyone know of any other belief, religion, creed, whatever, that doesn't celebrate birthdays?

and if, as has been alluded to on previous occasions, this is now a matter of conscience or should i say if it was advertised and more widely spread as...exactly how many jw consciences would it bother?

would anyone read the bible on their own and conclude that celebrating birthdays was a diabolical sin?

Tij I'm not aware of any other cults religions not celebrating birthdays, but this was a good thread on birthdays that Auld Soul started a short while back - http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/10/143529/1.ashx

The Worldwide Church of God founded by Herbert Armstrong did not celebrate birthdays or Christmas. Armstrong was ordained by the Church of God 7th Day which in turn came from Second Adventists and William Miller.

They have changed a lot of their doctrine since Herbert's death. They now accept the Trinity. I am not sure if they brought back birthdays and Christmas.

The events after Herbert Armstrong's death were a very close parallel to Charles Russell's death. The thought of the founder is ignored and forgotten.

so it doesn't even look like they are unique in this.

"A Church Reborn" The Plain Truth , p1

"Tkach's review of the church's Statement of Beliefs in 1987 prompted a series of doctrinal alterations, including the acceptance of the Trinity and of the Holy Spirit's divinity, and the admission that humans are not born again as Gods, as Armstrong preached. Medicinal and cosmetic use, and the observance of holidays long-pronounced by Armstrong as pagan, such as birthdays, Christmas, and Easter, were proclaimed permissible."

I also found this little gem, written (presumably) by an ex-member: http://members.tripod.com/ejm/christmas.htm

Reminds me of the one I did last year about Rutherfraud and Christmas: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/126048/1.ashx

Having spent my first 21 years in churches, and around people who belonged to various churches-Catholic, Baptist, 7th Day Adv., synogauges (sp?), and mosques, I can say that from them I've not known of anyone who were against birthdays!

    Celebrating life is fine!
