Otherwise known as a Ponzi scheme, after its inventor. Amway is included here. Anyone remember Swipe? Mary Kay too! There's a thousand of 'em. And there was that guy Glenn something or other in Florida "Dare to be {something}" He was habituated to wearing white buck shoes and had a cleft palatte (just to help you remember). He did time, actually. The bunko squad got him.

    Hi Andi,

Annoying isn't it? A good friend had a good business suggestion, he said, and eventually it proved to be such an MLM scheme. Of course I rejected it, even made some spreadsheet models to show it was useless and unrealistic, but it did no good. He'd been totally hooked, and wasted lots of money on a product he could neither sell nor use. As soon as he realized that MLM chain was a scam, he jumped to another one, etc, etc.

The main problem as I see it is that this "business" is a leech on friendships and family. It encourages people to try to sell the idiotic idea to their friends, collegues and family, and I have seen more than one friendship seriously endangered when the born-again MLMer was insulted at being rejected or discouraged.

Particularly tragic when exJWs get suckered in.

Glad you had the sense to reject this scam. I expected no less!

    Andie,

I totally understand what you are talking about. I moved out of my parents house a few years ago and was really struggling to make ends meet when a co-worker told me about this great opportunity to make x-tra money in a "small" sidebusiness. I should have seen the light when it seemed that she never had enough time to give me all of the details about the job. I arrived at the interview and was promptly shown a video of "shiny, happy people" lounging around the pool stopping occasionally to stroll to the mailbox and pick up a big load of money(yeah, right-HELLO PYRAMID SCHEME). I told them I wasn't interested and they just kept on talkin'(hello-did they just hear me say no?). Then the most amazing thing happened, the girl actually had the nerve to show up at the interview to convince me that this was a wonderful chance at a great future. You can imagine my reaction (MEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW-pphhhhttttt!!!!!. We worked in a small office and it was all I could do to be civil-fortunately, she gave her notice the following month. Hang in there-you'll find something great!!!!!!!! Roo

    Hi Andi,

I worked at Lucent Technologies in 1996. When they were doing really well. I had recently started. A co-worker, who had 25 years in the company (Western Electric, ATT then became Lucent in 1996)told me of a wonderful business he did on the side. He was convinced that Lucent was going down the tubes and he was planning for the future. (I should have paid attention to that part!)

After harrassing me long distance (he was in New Jersey, I was in Kansas) for months, I finally agreed to listen to see if perhaps I could work on the side and earn even more money. [;D]

He sent me a packet of information and a video. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be AMWAY!!!! He would help set me up and get a part of my sales, all I had to do was convince family and friends to purchase Amway products.

I declined to be a part of this pyramid scheme.

I understand your frustration. Someone you trust tries to take advantage of that trust and use you for their gain. A neighbor recently came by to tell me I would make a great travel agent (Lucent layoffs)! I declined to become a travel agent....especially now!!

Good luck with your job search!

    Billygoat,

You are spot on in your assessment. All of thease pyramid schemes quickly founder as you run out of people to recruit.

    Englishman,

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be....

There's an MLM doing the rounds in Ireland at the moment. It's sheer genius. There's no product, participants simply pay £3,000 and in theory, get back £27,000 after a few weeks. The other brilliant innovation is that it's only open to women, although I'd put money on it having been invented by a man!
