the roman empire (republic)
Wrong, the republic was there but the empire just started at the same time ruffly as Jesus birth.
When Octavian took the name Ceasar and control of the Republic. Remember, when he found rome it was made of brick and when he left it was made of marble.
Another telling sign the Catholic church's holding to Latin not Hebrew as the language of god.

yes 5go i realize that. Thats why i set the word republic off. When a person says "empire" they can mean an imperial soverentiy ruled by an emperor (as you meant)
or
a major political unit having a territory of great extent or a number of territories or peoples under a single sovereign authority (like the united states)
the point is: "Can you please make your point?"

From the Republic to the Principate: Augustus (27 BC–AD 14)
There is no exact date to when the empire officaly started but the same could be said of jesus birth. So they picked a year.
History of Anno Domini
Early Christians designated the year via a combination of consular dating , imperial regnal year dating, and Creation dating . Use of consular dating ended when the emperor Justinian I discontinued appointing consuls in the mid 6th century, requiring the use of imperial regnal dating shortly thereafter. The last consul nominated was Anicius Faustus Albinus Basilius in 541. The papacy was in regular contact throughout the Middle Ages with envoys of the Byzantine world, and had a clear idea — sudden deaths and deposals notwithstanding — of who was the Byzantine emperor at any one time.
The Anno Domini system was developed by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus (born in Scythia Minor ) in Rome in 525, as an outcome of his work on calculating the date of Easter . In his Easter table Dionysius equates the year AD 532 with the regnal year 284 of Emperor Diocletian ; in his cover letter he equates the year AD 525 with the consulate of Probus Junior. "However, nowhere in his exposition of his table does Dionysius relate his epoch to any other dating system, whether consulate, Olympiad, year of the world, or regnal year of Augustus; much less does he explain or justify the underlying date [4] " [emphasis added]. Blackburn & Holford-Strevens briefly present arguments for 2 BC, 1 BC, or AD 1 as the year Dionysius intended for the Nativity or Incarnation.

The point being no one knew when Jesus was born but there was a calender in place from the Romans. So they just used it.
This also explains the confusion in the account of his birth. Being that Herod the Great's death is quite off. Though not enough for the uninformed to notice it. He died much earlier that the account suggest's. Infact four years to early.
Hebrew: ????????? Hordos ?, Greek: ???d?? ), also known as Herod I or Herod the Great (73 BC – 4 BC in Jericho), was a Romanclient king of Judaea. [1

Dr. Luke's account will suffice for me.
3:1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
