How many of you were required to give up a certain career you had in order to become a JW or before you could be baptised?

Help here in naming all the job positions and careers that dubs are not allowed to have AND the scriptural reason for it. Detail if possible.

Can a JW be a mortician?

How many of you were deterred from a career goal and now, since leaving, are back on the path that you wanted to pursue?

JW's cannot be police officers. I don't know of the scriptural reason why. But police officers have to be trained to and ready to use deadly force, and I guess the idea of having to kill would be what the WTS finds objectionable. But police officers are not violating the Bible command 'do not murder', since any killing they do is thoroughly investigated to be sure it was done in the line of duty. (This presumes that the reasonable definition of murder is the UNLAWFUL taking of another human's life.)

ANY job that took a JW away from the meetings was considered BAD! "Get a new job, or else....!" "You're not putting Jehovah first!" "Your field service will suffer!" "Do you think God will approve of that job?" Or favorite one, "You'll be working too long of hours and miss all your meetings!"

So what was a person supposed to do if he/she has to provide for a family? The elders were no help. BTW, they don't even have professional training with a degree to counsel. How DARE they play that role with their members. If we went to college and got a degree that would allow us better paying jobs, and allow us to work less hours, they weren't for that either. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

This is a great topic to start. There is an active Jehovah's Witness who posts all over the internet under the screen name of "KeysDan" He's been mocked several times on this forum as well as others for his sappy pro-JW messages. His line of work? He's a DJ which seems pretty innocent in the eyes of the Watchtower BUT his web site says he'll work Bar/Bat Mitvahs, birthday parties, baptisms, briss, and other events JW's are not allowed to participate in. http://www.keysdan.com/Events_Home.html

I had very much wanted to a US Marshall, FBI agent, etc. but of course was not allowed to pursue those fields. "What if you shot someone?" My answer: They probably had it coming by putting my life in danger, which I have a right to defend.

Basically, anything besides scrubbing toilets, washing windows, or doing hard manual labor all day was frowned upon. College? <<<GASP>>>

Didn't you know? Education and being around worldly people just leads you down the path to materialism and godlessness.

Gopher is correct to the reasons. Here is some additional info to consider.

As long as the brother or sister is a police officer, they would not be used for any privileges.

While all officer involved shootings are investigated, the BOE's could not accept the recommendations or decisions of the investagative officer. After all, they are worldly and could possible make a mistake. The BOE is the only authority that could render whether an action was considered blood-guilty or not. Since most if not all BOE's are lazy, they would take the best way out by encouraging the individual not to continue in this line of employment. They will use the Bible's most used and most mistranslated scripture by placing the blame on any un-named person in the hall. "You wouldn't want to STUMBLE someone by placing yourself in harms way."

It doesn't matter what the problem is. Food, clothing, job, poofy hairdo, too much aftershave, ect. ect. ect. If they don't like it they will use the 'stumble' scripture to get you to change.

    Had to add:

It also depends on your current position. There are Two (2) Count them TWO ELDERS in Coos Bay, Oregon. One is a photographer and the other is a limo owner/driver. The photographer has on his website pictures of different people that he and his wife have taken pictures of. Get this. One of the jobs is a BIRTHDAY PARTY and who drove the birthday kids around? The other Elder. Talk about #%*&@$##.

Obviously they are not allowed to join the military but also the political or diplomatic service. Even though the Bible says that ALL authorities are from God and the JWs know that they still look at them as being from the Devil.

Politics is a very broad field and it is of itself neither good nor bad, it depends what one makes of it. It is much like a camera it can be used to take beautiful educational photos of wild life or pictures of nude children (child pornography). It is the nature of the user rather than that of the camera that decides it.
