i think frankie's assessment is quite with chomsky's, wording
slightly different. to demonstrate the normal hypocrisy,
chomsky made his nomination for the three most notable acts
of terrorism in '85. each of them would be denied by most
"patriots", because it didn't meet our needs to have terrorism
be defined as something others do to us. these were acts of
terrorism that we orchestrated and/or carried out, so to use
another chomskyism, they are "not even part of the discourse".

I understand Noam's points....
Maybe this will make sense to you, and maybe it won't....but to me a person can be patriotic, intelligent and agree or disagree with government policy.
Its kind of like when a person calls someone else liberal intending it to be a total insult. I think you can be liberal, patriotic, and agree or disagree with governmental policy.
Pretty simple point really.

a resounding yes. but that doesn't define me as a patriot (one who loves and
loyally or zealously support's ones own country)....and in fact, i feel the
need to avoid that distinction in order to be more honest with myself re:
the reality of my country's hypocrisy...a higher level of patriotism was
expressed by bush sr. a few years ago, "i never apologize for my country,
right or wrong". -

While this statement is sometimes true with what we are dealing with Islamo fasist terrorism we are dealing with an enemy that swill not negotiate with in fact there is no way we could call a cease fire with Bin Laden he beleives this war will go on until the day of judgement. If we were all to become Muslims there still would be no let up in hostilities and bin laden would continue with war on muslims he considers to be apostate.
