Ooooh, I LOVE Hampton Court!! A couple of things to look for that aren't usually mentioned on the guided tour: In one of the rooms there's a painting on the ceiling, and the eyes of one of the figures will follow you as you walk across the room. In another room there's a painting hanging on the wall of a group of nobles (wish I could remember more details -- it's been a while!). If you look closely you will see that there is a circular cut around one of the noble's heads. When Cromwell came to power and ousted the Royal Family for a while, he started selling off valuables, so one of the Dukes cut this painting so it would be worthless and Cromwell couldn't sell it. It was restored once Charles II assumed the throne.
And, last but not least, down in the beer/wine cellar there's a small door that leads to a secret passage down to the river, which allowed Cardinal Wolsey to visit his mistress without being noticed.
The gardens are magnificent. This is one of my favorite palaces!
