I have an old King James, a Revised Standard, and a NWT. I generally prefer the RS.

I say, variety is the spice of life. For unusual word choices, read "The Message". I've been leaning towards ESV lately, but when I use an online search engine, I mostly remember the KJV word choices.

G'day mate, I think my version of the "bible" is very well described in the words of Marquis de Sade

Beloved reader, I leave you now with a tale penned by the Abbe du Coulmier, a man who found freedom, in the most unlikeliest of places: at the bottom of an inkwell, on the tip of a quill. However, be forewarned, it's plot is blood-soaked, it's characters depraved, and it's themes... unwholesome at best. But in order to know virtue, we must acquaint ourselves with vice. Only then can we know the full measure of man. So come... I Dare you... Turn the page...

or in translation Life is my holy book

The New World Translation won't hurt you. It has it's own doctrinal biases, which you should be pre-warned about.

For instance, the Christian Greek scriptures. The Witnesses did not always use the oldest source documents. Whenever "Lord" is used, they rather used much later transcripts that inserted "Jehovah".
