Finally rehashed something I wrote about 5 years ago, entitled "How to Create a Vision of Paradise":

(Randy Watters mentioned something about putting Part I in Freeminds Journal; I don't know if it ever happened)

    Very good, Stephanus!

Notice everyone has a 'perma-grin' on their faces.

    I wonder:

    1. what lumber mill is producing the boards for the house?

    2. what factory is producing the clothes, shoes?

    3. why don't I ever see a mode of transporatation?(where the hell are the horses and wagons to carry all that lumber and clothes?)

    4. Does perfection mean than plaque won't build up on your teeth? If it does, where are the dentists and their offices?

    5. When someone breaks their ass, where are the doctors that know how to set bones, and their offices?

    6. What? No plumbing? No sewer? who will produce pipes and conduit for these things?

    7. do we drag water out of wells from a bucket, or are there going to be tradesman busy building people well pumps for a living?

    8. What about paint? Who's going to be busy producing paint for everyone to paint their houses?

    OR:

Are we going back to cave man days?

    There's much more

    Thanks Ranchette!

TR, their "visions of paradise" always raise those sorts of questions with me too (especially the lumbermill one!).

    In addition to your points:

    1. What chemical plant is producing: the dyes for those checked shirts (and other clothing) they all wear?
    2. The fertilisers for this lush vegetation they all produce?
    3. In some of their pictures the houses they build have very large sections of glass. Float glass production is a highly specialised technology requiring a lot of plant, machinery and infrastructure. Are they training the Bethelites in its production?
    4. What about the bricks and concrete used in all these projects? Large amounts of capital equipment required for these too.
    5. Electricity, gas, etc?

I've raised some of these points with Dubs - they tend to dismiss them with a wave of the hand and "These pictures are just meant to be a guide". I then counter: "I can read quite well; I don't need some hammy pictures to help me out. Why does Bethel bother?" Even my mother, who doesn't usually give a rat's about the Dubs says that their pictures of Paradise are "a bit twee".

Back in my JW days I used to spend days, no weeks trying to work out all the 'technical stuff' and alot of my questions have already been mentioned in this post..

How about communication as well? How will the big brooklyn boys get their orders, er, information to the far flung corners of the earth? Will there be tv? Radio? And that number one instrument of Satan, the Internet?

Awww, not to worry about these things, just go stroke a lion or something....

Good points Prisca and NewbieGirl: Plastic is a ubiquitous part of modern life, yet the artwork tends to ignore it as much as possible; perhaps there's some sense of "unnaturalness" to it that wood, clothing and even glass don't have. It also needs a huge industrial infrastructure to support it. As for telecomms, yes, I've thought of that one too. I assume that Bethel would still be giving orders to the R&F via the KH network; I can't see them being satisfied by carrier pigeon deliveries. How many JWs can repair fibre optic cables?

Ozzie, there IS life beyond leather: try latex!
