I agree that using a seatbelt is benificial. I just don't want to be told by government that I must or else they'll fine me and make $$$$$.

In an ideal world, I would say NO.

In the world that I live in, definitely YES.

If you are involved in at accident and someone in the other car is injured or killed, even if it is not your fault, you or your insurance could have to pay for their injuries.

Ever heard of deep pockets? Someone else could be 90% and you 10%, to blame for an accident and if they have no or not enough insurance, you get to pay.

Many people have only the minimum insurance the law requires, many more have none, (I remember someone here on JWD advocating only having minimum). In California that is $15,000 for one person. $30,000 for more than one person. $5,000 for property damage, if someone is injured it could easily cost 20 times that, if they die 70 to 150 times that or more.

When the law says "Anyone that doesn't wear a seatbelt doesn't get a dime or medical treatment paid by someone other than themselves" then and only then would I give them the freedom to choose.

In New Hampshire, the Council that has power to make laws happen, voted against the mandatory seat belt law. It appears that seat belt use will remain voluntary. Do you believe the government should require such laws??? No. But with all the things they put their grimy little paws in, that issue is not going to get me millitant. Government should provide national security and thats it.

No, we have too much governing by the government already. Pretty soon you'll need permision to take a piss by the government.

Actually I'm stunned that there are any States where it's still voluntary and not mandatory------it's been mandatory in Canada for years. The cops were out on Saturday morning about 10:30am doing their 'blitz' making sure everyone was wearing their seatbelt. (god how I hope they nailed some Dubs out in Service.....nyuk, nyuk, nyuk) If they catch you NOT wearing it, I think it's an automatic $75.00 or $100.00 fine. Seatbelts might be a pain in the ass, but they save alot of lives. This is one area where I think it should be mandatory.
