How Disfellowshipping Corrupts Congregations

Disfellowshipping is frequently held up as an example of how Jehovah's Witnesses are different from

other religions and how Jehovah supposedly keeps the organization "clean". However, the first

question that needs to be asked is if disfellowshipping really keeps congregations morally clean

then why does the Bible condemn the Jews in Jesus' day as a corrupt nation (who practised

it)? Obviously, by itself, it doesn't make things "cleaner", if the men doing it are rotten.

More than that, it can used to corrupt the organization. See:

Disfellowshipping can be creatively used to silence anyone who dares to expose wrongdoing in the

congregation , by accusing them of "apostacy" or "promoting division". More than that, it can be

used to undermine a congregation by allowing the elders to protect their errant children while "making

an example" of others who lack the privileges of power.

By doing the above , and by the Watchtower Society going along with local elders,

disfellowshipping can easily spread rot and corruption thru the organization. If any of you lurkers,

think otherwise, feel free to speak up.

It is impossible for disfellowshipping to keep a congregaton clean. It is based on the presumption that the elders can discern if a person is repentent. They cannot read a person's heart, so this is impossible.

Another presumption is that the elders are impartial and chosen by God. This has been proven false many times over. How many men were appointed as elders and remain as such while carrying on some hideous behavior. What about the elders that abuse children?

After raising children, I found out how often people remain in the congrgation while carrying on an immoral lifestyle. So the congregation is not "clean", as they put it, in any sense.

It all comes down to human nature. We all make bad decisions at times. These are best handled on a personal basis, unless the legal authorities need to be involved. When humans rule over other humans, you will always see corrupt behavior. The elders are not impartial and often show favoritism, especially to their family and friends.

And yes, this leads to corruption of the congregation.

So it would then stand to reason....

Disfellowshipping to silence dissenters (ie, not for immorality, etc) is evidence that the organisation is already corrupt. It doesn't cause corruption, it merely perpetuates the rottenness that was already there, from the top down.

I've never personaly heard of any elders getting away with disfellowshipping someone who exposed some serious wrongdoing or 'corruption' on the part of the elders (not meaning exposing false teachings of the Society). Usually if such a thing happens the CO is sent in quick smart to deal with the scandal and often the guilty elders are sacked.

One of the key problems with disfellowshipping and shunning is that it drives sin underground. My JW hubby is far more fearful of committing acts in public, where a fellow Witness might catch him. He is more relaxed at home where no-one but God is watching. This hypocrisy is noted by the "world", and it's not a pretty picture.

Sinning Evangelicals, in my experience, feel guilty all the time, as God is everywhere watching. But they have time to make things right.

Sinning Catholics feel guilty until the next confession.

Why is does a Witness have ten times more "holy fear" of his own "brothers" than he does of God?

Both Russell and Rutherford recognised disfellowshipping for apostasy as a means of control and that that making all followers think alike on doctrine is what originally caused the great apostasy. Zion’s Watch Tower 1893 p.263 “The endeavor to compel all men to think alike on all subjects, culminated in the great apostasy and the development of the great Papal system; and thereby the “gospel,” the “one faith,” which Paul and the other apostles set forth, was lost buried under the mass of uninspired decrees of popes and councils. The union of the early church, based upon the simple gospel and bound only by love, gave place to the bondage of the church of Rome a slavery of God's children, from the degradation of which multitudes are still weak and suffering .”

    In The New Creation pp.326-327 Russell stated that to be considered a brother one only had to “grasp the fundamentals” (that all were sinners; that Christ redeemed us by his sacrifice, and the need for consecration.) Pages 263 and 264 encouraged open questioning of doctrine;

“… God designed to instruct his people by means of each other; and that even the humblest of his flock shall think for himself and thus develop an individual faith as well as an individual character. Alas, that this important matter is so generally overlooked amongst those who name the name of Christ! … They are not to be machines, nor to be afraid to communicate; but by asking questions, calling attention to what seems to them to be misapplications of Scripture or what not, they are to do their part in keeping the body of Christ and his teachings pure—they are thus to be critics; and instead of being discouraged from doing this, and instead of being told that they must not criticize the teacher or call in question his expositions, they are, on the contrary, urged to communicate, to criticize.”

Watchtower 1920 April 1 pp.100-101; “If others see it in a different way, that is their privilege. There should be full liberty of conscience.”

Watchtower 1930 October 1 p.301 “Satans organization sails under the high-sounding name of "Christendom". It boasts of a membership of over 500,000,000 persons. Its members are in bondage to creeds, customs, rites and ceremonies; they dare not disown these or criticize or expose them. To do so would bring down on their heads taunts, reproaches, disfellowship and persecution. Many thousands of the Lords people are held in these denominations as prisoners , afraid to express their disapproval of the creeds, methods and customs of the organization.”

Until the 1930's disfellowshipping was not done by a small group of elders but by the entire congregation to minimise the potential for corruption. Russell promoted leniency in all but the gravest matters. In such situations an unrepentant person was judged not by a judicial committee by the entire congregation, in line with Matthew 18:17; “If he does not listen to them, speak to the congregation. If he does not listen even to the congregation , let him be to you just as a man of the nations and as a tax collector.”

The New Creation p.289 “ The administration of discipline is not the function of the elders only, but of the entire Church. … Thus it is evident that the Elders were in no sense to be judges of the members—hearing and judgment were left to the local body, or Church.”
