    Hmmm, I think "c." stands for cup, but that does seem like a lot of sugar to use!

    How much sugar? In recipes, the abbreviation for a cup is c. A spoon is abbreviated tbsp for a tablespoon (which is 1/2 fl oz) or tsp for a teaspoon (1/3 tablespoon). How much nicer things will be if we would just give up this out of date English measurement system and go metric! Then no one would get confused by the abbreviations since everything would be in milliliters.

    As for blenders, if you have a Vita-Mix, those make excellent smoothies. That's what the professionals use. On the down side, they are very expensive (about $500). That is a lot of money for a blender that can be had for $20. On the plus side, the ice will be totally pulverized with no chunks. And the motor will last much longer. Only you can determine if the machine warrants the price you will pay, or if your existing blender will do a good enough job.

    Amazing how one can build a (long-running) business around such a simple concoction.

    Here are three more versions of the recipe. I don't think there are any "absolutes" on the quantities involved, just adjust them to suit your own taste.

    Variation One:

    5 min 5 min prep
    3-4 servings

    3 ounces frozen orange juice concentrate
    1/2 cup milk
    1/2 cup water
    1/4 cup sugar
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    5-6 ice cubes

    1. Combine all the ingredients in the blender until frothy and smooth.
    2. Makes 2 to 3 servings.

    Variation Two

    1 sm. can of frozen orange Juice
    1 cup of milk
    1 cup of water
    1/2 cup of sugar
    8 or 9 ice cubes
    1 tsp vanilla

    Combine all ingredients in blender - run at high speed till well mixed

    Variation Three (this one uses powdered sugar)

    * 1 2/3 cup of orange juice
    * 1 cup of milk
    * 6 regular size ice cubes
    * 1/4 cup powdered sugar
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    I recall long ago when I was watching an Orange Julius being made that a powder was added to the orange juice and ice in the blender.

    Orange Julius is a fruit smoothie, created by blending frozen orange juice, ice cubes, and a white powder. While the formulation of the powder is officially a secret, it is popularly believed to contain: powdered milk, powdered egg whites, sugar, and vanilla.

    If I remember correctly - I used to have a pocket-sized booklet containing instructions for homemade equivalents of "secret" recipes - the powder added to the Orange Julius was a packet of Dream Whip.
