Or any other family member that was not in "the cult"? I was always embarrassed to say that I didn't know. I never did learn how to deflect the question.

just say "she is doing fine", but you do not know that, but you might be telling the truth, you do not have to say "I do not know"

Burst into tears and tell them that your mothers dead, that way they never put anyone on the spot like that again.

Well she is dead now. I'm the one that's getting shunned by my children now. What comes around goes around.

When I'm asked about my father I say I haven't heard from him in years so no news is good news.

I have an idea for you, maybe you can adopt a mother in nursing home, etc...., so you can think of her as your mother. Just an idea.

I tell people the truth.....My parents are Jehovah's Witnesses and they don't have anything to do with me anymore, or my children, or their great-grandchildren since we left the religion a few years back. JW's shun people for religious reasons.

p.s. You might want to ask them about that the next time they come to your door.....

Well..it was kind of them to ask wasnt it? Most people are afraid to broach the subject even. So you can say it was so kind of you to ask...sadly she passed away in 200_. I do miss her.
