I tend to like the rendering "In the beginning, [the] Gods (elohim) created the heavens and the earth."
It kind of ties in with the later verse "Let Us make man in our image."
We all know (well, at least some of us) that the pre-reform, pre-exile Hebrews were polytheists with
their teraphim (household gods) and Yahweh's wife Asherah.
So, any "scientific" analysis that fails to account for multiple gods and two genders falls short in my
opinion. ;P
